Girard is an LD. If Jones was acquired he would likely be replacing Erik Johnson. EJ would need to be traded, part of the deal, taken by Seattle, or put on LTIR.

I'm curious why this concept of leaving UFAs unsigned until after the expansion draft has been presented as something earth-shattering?

Plenty of teams did this during the Vegas expansion draft as a smart tactic to protect another player. Vegas had the chance to negotiate with a number of high profile UFAs. In the end, they signed Deryk England from Calgary. That's it. 30 selections and only 1 UFA. A depth defensemen, primarily because he lived in Vegas and it helped create a bit of buzz.

So this isn't some shocking detail. Smart GMs have been planning this since before Seattle was officially announced. But if Landeskog or Ovechkin signs in Seattle I'll close my account...

When Hall said he only wanted to be traded to Boston, it actually meant that he's looking forward to signing as a UFA in Calgary, where he was born. Seth Jones to Colorado. RNH to Vancouver. Matthews to Arizona. Not that complicated.
