But your math included moving out Morgan.
Losing a top 4 D for another 6+ million forward, doesnt make sense.
Also the leafs have about 13m in available cap space.
So its not really feasible unless you move out a core piece.
Or else they'll have no depth at all. - Fakepartofme

I don't think anyone in the core four is moving.
That being said - of course they said no one is moving. That's what you always say right up until the player is traded.

I dont think Dubie has guts to move one of them out.
Unless he gets blowing away with an offer. |

Outside the core 4?
Rielly, Brodie, Campbell, Muzzin, Spezza Kerfoot, Galchenyuk, Bogosian All did very well in their roles. - Santo_44
Sorry, I was speaking of the forward group. Kerfoot and Spezza showed up. Gally had precisely 1 good game.
Beyond that? |

Gally performed if if he’s still on the Habs’ payroll. He had a bit of offense but couldn’t be trusted by his coach in third periods. He was inconsistent as hell. Do not bring him back. |

I think the initial plan was the have the season begin at the "normal" start time. - Scabeh
Not likely if the Olympics are happening. - BINGO!
From what I understand, the NHL has said they are targeting October 12th, but nothing is official.
If anyone has better info, please feel free to correct me. - Atomic Wedgie
sounds like a normal season start for the next 1st rd loss

Then you need another top 4.
Our D was actually good this year...ya I get it, they only played North division teams.
But they looked the best Ive seen in a decade or so.
Or do people think Sandin can replace morgan? |

It's going to be interesting to see what Dubas & Co. do.
One option is to go with protecting 4F, 4D, 1 goalie:
Tavares
Marner
Nylander
Matthews
Muzzin
Brodie
Rielly
Holl
Campbell
I'm wondering if Seattle will be interested in Kerfoot. He's kinda a guy that doesn't really check any one box, especially for an expansion club.
He only has two years left before being UFA.
He's not underpaid or overpaid.
He's not really "a strong veteran presence in the room who the kids can learn from."
He's not really top 2 line material.
Dermott may be more tempting. - Atomic Wedgie
I could see thme going 7-3-1.
Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Engvall, Kerfoot, Brooks or Joey Anderson.
Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie
Campbell

Tbh I have no idea what his value is.
Depends on the market more than his talent as his season brings his value down.
But if he thinks the Leafs are a good fit for him as a player and a person I just wonder how much less he is willing to take.
He probably gets 6x7M on the open market.
Would he take 7x6m? Or less? I think I'd really have to entertain that. - Santo_44
Or maybe he’s just juicing the market |

Right around what you should expect from a player making 1 million.

I remember a few years ago before he was traded to Vegas, I suggested a Nylander for Stone trade.
the Nylander fanboys thought that was crazy, and Stone supposedly was a very limited player.
Matthews and Marner could have used a Stone on their line - MaximusAurelius
This sounds familiar. Like when Roger said "people told me Matthews was overrated." Wrong. No one said that. |

The who,e North Division issue is irrelevant. Compare the D to the offense on the playoffs. That’s what matters. Muzzin and Spezza were top scorers |

100% agree that the Leafs need to replace Rielly with a legit Top 4 defender if he was to go. They need to double-down on him or look elsewhere and think long term about who can fill that spot.
I like to think Sandin might be a guy that can QB the power play going forward but I'm not entirely convinced he's up for the challenge of playing Top 4, unprotected minutes.
So the question is who to bring in if Rielly goes?
Lastly, I don't think we should read too much into this year's regular season results. It's not just that the North was a weak division -- it's that the Leafs only played against 6 opponents all year and then couldn't even get past a team that probably wouldn't have made the playoffs if the season had gone a full 82 games.
To wit: I'm not terrible confident that next season will be any better than this year. As a matter of fact, I'm quite cynical about our chances on improving our regular season performance and/or moving past the first round.
Here's hoping Dubas/Pridham can weave some magic! |

To be fair, John Tavares - a huge part of the offence - was missing for 99% of the playoffs. Foligno was hurt. Hyman might have still been hurt.
Not quite sure I buy the whole "offence is broken - must fix!" narrative. |

Taylor Hall on his next contract: "I'm not looking to absolutely maximize value."
He noted that he's made some good money in the league already, and that a "good fit" might be the priority on his new deal.
"You want to find a home for the next few years."

I am absolutely not going to say we do it...but Hall does have a lot of ties in Ontario. His GF lives here.
But if he takes a pay cut do we consider it? - Santo_44
He said that last year. He's going to sign with some poophole rebuilding team for as much as they will pay him. |
