“The Timonen and Hartnell acquisitions, along with the free agent signing of Danny Briere and the 2006-07 in-season trades that brought Braydon Coburn and Martin Biron to the Flyers were major driving forces in the Flyers' instant turnaround from the NHL's worst record in 2006-07 to being in the Eastern Conference Final one season later and the Stanley Cup Final two seasons after that.”

What would this need to look like for the current Flyers team?

I think most teams would make a nice swing by adding a slick-scoring first liner, a decent 2nd liner with some ‘insert favorite hockey cliche here for rough play’ (grit, snarl, etc), a top 15 defenseman, and a quality/reliable 2nd pairing defenseman. All at the cost for just about nothing.

How often does this happen? They hit the jackpot.

I can’t foresee anything like that happening again without a plethora of cap space and a fantastic free agency all happening at once. It was their perfect storm.

The only fly in the ointment that off season was having Patrick Kane swiped from our grip.

We also got Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul that off season, and those two had success in orange.

Come to think of it, they landed like every top UFA and RFA that year except for Drury, and Drury didn’t end up fulfilling his expectations. his contract turned out to be a problem soon down the road.

If it was that simple...why don't ALL teams do that?

It doesnt IMO

Flyers made TDL deals to bring in Biron (2nd round pick + TJ Brennen) and Coburn (Zhitnik) for UFA rentals. Flyers dont really have UFAs to move

Timonen wise, trading for S.Jones is probably equivalent.

Flyers didnt touch the core at all. The following players were still on the roster: Gagne, Knuble, Richards, Carter, Umberger. They mostly just replaced a lot of the aged supporting cast such as Hatcher, Sanderson, York, Calder, Robitaille, Rathje ect.

Flyers arent really looking to remove too many players. They def want a D for sure but aside from that they basically just want NoPa, Konecny, Lindblom, Sanheim, Myers and Hart to bounce back.

Im sure the Flyers will look for deals that improve the team but this team isnt as desperate as the 2006-07 team

At some point you can’t keep all the young assets. Especially in cap world. At what point do we start to turn young assets over for better talent? Eichel anyone?

Eichel is going to cost too much. You are looking at 3 assets minimum maybe 4.

Flyers dont have enough youth to part with especially when the ask is likely to be Farabee, Sanheim, Frost and/or York.

You are going to need to beat offers from LA and ANH that have a large pool of young talent. BUF is going to want guys with a high ceiling.

No not rebuilding actually. They’re doing what we should if they move eichel or Reinhardt or both. They have a lot of high talent youth. Eichel more of superstar wanting out. Cozens is gonna be a beast. Olofson Quinn luukanen Dahlin. Add assets from eichel or Reinhardt trades and that’s how it’s done. Or you can do like we will probably do and sign coots long term and be middle of pack for next 5+ years.

I don't think Kane would have the success that he has today if he was drafted by Philly, imo.

The two issues I have with an Eichel acqusition is his injury history and contract. You're going to be moving a lot of pieces for a guy who is making 10 mil a year and might not be fully healthy.

Did Hextall move down in the draft so he could pick Rubstov?

I took a look at that draft. We could have done better. Although from the spot we could have drafted until our eventual landing spot - meh. not a whole lot. Better results than no results, but still nothing to get upset about.

Would’ve been kept at G’s wing and been the player Claude needed and deserved to have for over a decade. Kane’s numbers would have been similar. Giroux, on the other hand, would likely either be passing Clarke in points, or already ahead, for the team’s all time charts.
