Absolutely problem is it's looking like Buffalo want to rebuild all over again & we dont have the futures to compete or afford to give up. We need our #12 pick.
Personally, if I were Adams & odds are he's is getting underwhelming offers for Eichel (rightfully so because of the shroud of that injury) for a franchise Centre, I would keep Eichel one more year & get him back playing hockey & trying to find a way to get his production up. 2 things can happen, you get a humongous return on Eichel this time next year or he gets excited about playing in Buffalo again. Or you sell him now for much less than what a franchise centre should get.
To me, the target for the Sabres should be Gaudreau. Something tells me those two could be lethal playing together. Gaudreau, Valamaki, 2022 2nd we got from Florida & the 2021 3rd we got from the Oilers for Reinhart & your 1st over all. Flames kinda get a step back to rebuild but Reinhart is a piece we need for Sutter to try & win now. Sabres have had as many top 3 picks almost as the Oilers, honestly, you guys want another freaking rebuild????? |

Guest Writer: Where we are - Eklund
Nice to see a Flames blog. Going to be an interesting year. First off, if I were Treliving, I would try to get another pick in the top 10 as there are a few kids I like to see in the Flames pipeline. Columbus looks like a target for that 5th overall. They are going to lose a goalie in the ED. They are looking for a centre. Monahan & the Oilers 3rd in 2021 for Korpisalo & the 5th overall. Now, yes we are exposing him at the ED but it would show Gio we did a backdoor attempt to protect him. So Francis has his pick, Korpi for 2.7 mill cap or Gio at 6.75 mill. To me Francis will have a shot at several goalies & he takes Gio. Gio can play 20+ minutes & if Kracken have Vegas type success, a good anchor in the top 4. If they dont, Gio will be one heck of a trade piece at next years trade deadline. If that happens, Flames gain an extra approx 10 mill in cap space. We get two pretty decent first round picks to strengthen our pipeline to add to Zary, Pelletier & Wolf. But we have the $$$$ to either swing a trade & go get us a top 6 RW & perhaps get us that big bruising Dman like Olesiuk or Cole or Risto or Zadorov from Chicago. Korpi would be a pretty good backup or there seems to be a demand for goalies, we could flip him in a deal to Buffalo Korpi for Risto & their 2nd & absorb the full cap hit. Lots of options for us.
I do agree, we need someone that hits in that top 4 D.

Yeah, if I'm giving up the 1st I would need a 1st back especially with JG having only 1yr left on his contract. |

Dear "Guest Blogger/Trevor:"
I'm sure I can say on behalf of every Flames fan, THANK YOU! for this blog, the quality of which we have not seen since forever. And on Fathers' Day to boot!
I suspect that writing for HockeyBuzz is not what any sensible person aspires to ... but if you could do this once in awhile it would be sincerely appreciated by many who come here for its unique "ambiance."
Great job. Well written, some good stuff to chew on and argue about, and unspoiled by mind-numbing stats. Well done. |

Im sure extra pieces could be added. Kyllington & our 2nd be enough & we take out that Oiler 3rd?
Or I guess we can add the #12 pick & we get back your guys 2nd rounder? |

Think we could work it, definitely gonna be interesting to see what each team does. Think we have pieces that could help you and you have pieces that could help us. But does each GM think that. |

Thanks, man! I really appreciate that. If Todd doesn’t show up the next one will be about draft targets. |

Columbus looks like a target for that 5th overall. They are going to lose a goalie in the ED. Elvis is exempt in the ex-draft. |

So the Flames lose their best offensive weapon and gain a guy who’s career high is 65 points and the goal is to “win now”? Who drives offense when JG is gone?
JG alone should get you Reinhart and another good piece. |

Twice you mentioned Nick Ritchie, who plays for Boston. |

I dont disagree that right now offers for Gaudreau probably arent better than what a rental return would net at the TDL. So we may as well keep him & see how genuine he is to resign with us. 6 years at 8.0 mill sounds about right. But with 1 more year on his deal, to get Reinhart & that 1st over all, you need to add a lot more than Gaudreau to that equation. I would imagine Treliving has already reached out to see what the Gaudreau camp is asking for. If its $10mill + may as well do a blockbuster deal now. That means he wants to go back east. |

I just don’t think that 1OA this season doesn’t offset the massive loss of JG.
I’m not saying that you feel this way but some of this fan base’s opinion of JG just blows my mind. The guy is an elite point producer and is better at back checking than he gets credit for. The guy also competes.
To be fair, I probably over value him.
He’s not at the level of McD, Drai, Kuch, or MacK but he’s at the next tier in my opinion and any trade that sees JG going the other way needs to be an absolute fleecing of the other team. |

My bad. They’re both ogres. Was always a Nick Ritchie fan when he played for the Petes. My brain filled in the blanks. |

If the 12th isn't involved, then probably Valimaki would have to be involved. |

Talent wise I am in your camp, but with only 1 year left, we risk he walks after 1 more year. Thats why your return is dictated by that. Which is also why Treliving needs to find out how sincere Gaudreau is with extending & how reasonable his ask would be to stay in Calgary.

If it’s evident that JG has no intention of re-signing then yeah, get rid of him for something. I can agree with that. If it’s clear he wants to stay for a reasonable salary (8 million or so AAV) then they’ve secured a huge offensive piece.
The hardest part is not knowing where JG actually stands. He’s only ever said that he wants to stay in Calgary and I believe him but there is a small touch of worry that he’ll leave or his ask will be astronomical. |

What would be a reasonable trade from St Louis for M. Tkachuk ? What is the feel in Calgary regarding him ? is he still considered part of the core or is his act wearing thin ? |
