Personally, I don't think Couturier will want to continue his relationship with the Flyers when they continue to slide down the NHL standings in the coming years. I say that because of the core of elderly players who management seems to want to continue to compete with against other teams.

What suggests the Flyers will slide down the standings in the coming years?

You’d categorize Bergeron as fast? I don’t think Coots is an elegant skater but he gets around just fine.
- ClaudeFather

I’d categorize Bergeron as faster than Couturier…because he is.

One year left at 7 million, then an RFA.

Interesting option. He is going to get PAID.

drafted very well is an extreme over statement. Out of all his 1st and 2nd round picks, which of those are performing better than where they were drafted, or on track to. Only using 1st and 2nd round pick because those have the biggest impacts.
- bradster

It's not an overstatement at all. The question you asked is undefined and very subjective. Provorov is a top pairing NHL defenseman. Sanheim is a 2nd pair NHL defenseman. Konecny is a top 6 NHL winger. Farabee is developing into a top 6 NHL winger. Hart has the potential to be a top 5 NHL goalie. Allison looks like he has goal scoring potential. Still don't know enough about Frost and O'Brien. Rubtsov looks like a miss but he's still young. I'm not going to fault Hextall for the Patrick pick. Based on the information known at the time, it's just simply bad luck.

Yes he is, but speed has never been as issue in Couturiers game.

Of course not but at a certain age, skating is normally the first to go with players of size.

What are you taking about? JVR has trade value, a PP specialist with only 2 years remaining on his deal. I think the Flyers can get something for him, presuming they are not already content with JVR being selected by Seattle. With Ghost, I think there is value for an offensive defenseman that can score 10+ goals in a season. Maybe not at his price with his defensive liabilities, which is why I would cover some salary if need be.
- jd250

In my opinion, you don't consider the impact the flat cap is likely to have on the NHL trade market enough.

If I were Fletcher I would be willing to go up to a 2nd round pick and even eat some salary, but not a 1st round pick and Jake unless I was getting something back, like a 2022 2nd rounder or their 1st in 2023 or 2024.
- jd250

Well then Seattle is likely to say no.

True, but he was never a burner, so I don't think there would be much drop off from something that was never there. Coots strength is his hockey sense. He is always where he is supposed to be and I don't see that suddenly changing.

If you actually learned to read and read any of my posts, that is exactly what I have been saying all along, the value in the trades of these players is shaking up the veteran core and gaining cap space so you can sign other FAs.
- jd250

Rearranging the deck chairs? You mentioned that JVR was on pace for 63 points and 15 PP goals. Which UFA are you going to sign to match that production and at what cap hit?

Good point that few are willing to address.

What deal does Couturier sign? $8.25 cap hit or more? 6 - 8 years? NMC? And how does this affect the rest of the roster/cap space? The risk is significant and dismissed too easily by some.

- Captain_Ahab

That's not true. Anyone who follows hockey knows that there are risks to signing a player to a long term deal.

Possibly, do you think Seattle would say yes to Jake and the 13th pick?

If (big IF) Schwartz stays healthy I think he can get you 55-60 points for a lesser salary. Saad would ask for about the same, maybe slightly less given the cap. Either player would be an upgrade IMO because they would add elements JVR does not have, speed for one.

I don't know but that would likely be the only chance you have if you want them to take Voracek.

if i can get 70% of that production and 50% of the same cap hit on a FA id take it. You dont always need to replace production 1 for 1. Thats not how hockey works. Just like sometimes there is addition by subtraction. Nothing is linear

Yes, this could be very true. I think we will know for sure once free agency opens up and players start signing. For example if Hamilton signs for under $8M per you know the cap is having an impact.

Like candy huh?

They have exactly 2 NMC's. And Hayes only runs through the end of this season iirc.

- MBFlyerfan

Simple question for you. Do you think ex selke gets a NMC? Yes or No.

Agreed, well said. I would rather have less points but more speed and tenacity for example, because that equates to less goals against.
