Could be moving on? They are both past the end of there careers, They have no value and especially with Detroit, It's beyond me why players hang on to long as If they will discover the fountain of youth.

I suspect that if you were a professional hockey player and there was at least one GM out there willing to pay you $700,000 per year (or more) to play hockey, it would quickly become apparent why so many guys "hang on too long." As a fan, sure, I hate seeing crappy vets stick around long after they've outlived their usefulness, but I certainly don't blame the players themselves for wanting to play as long as they can keep getting job offers.

Filppula is washed. This is probably the end of the road for his NHL career.

Helm is still a perfectly functional low-event fourth liner, although I agree that if we wants to continue his NHL career it should not be with Detroit.

Same. A contender needs those extra few bodies, and I think Helm could still serve as a 4th line/taxi squad (if they bring it back) player. He can be waived off the books, and he works his butt off. Fil looks like he’s ready to hang them up, for sure. I always wondered if Helm would try a 1 year in Winnipeg for the home town fun of it.

Helm will probably end up in Edmonton. Oilers have had problems finding decent bottom 6 guys and Holland loves players he knows over those he doesn't. Wouldn't surprise me to see Glendening end up there too unless re-signed by the Wings.

I'm good with either or both of them hanging up the skates/moving on. There will be serviceable replacements in free agency who probably will make our team better than those two. I'm fine with letting go of Biega too. It's time to move on from Holland's work and let Stevie put his stamp on the franchise. (Note: I don't mean dump our cap space on free agency. Small calculated moves like last year, Ryan, Stecher, and Merrill.)

Helm served the team well, but it’s time to move on & open a slot for a kid. Fils played well in his career (both of then did), but again it’s time to move on. I’d imagine that Helm will play 1 more year, can be a serviceable 4th line guy, help bring a kid along.

I’m a Glennie fan. One can offer he’s past his prime, but when you finish where in the league in FOW%?? I want him back. He’s got gas left, is low-cost high reward. And he teaches, if you’ve watched video feeds, he’s working with guys to show them how he does it. Another year, for sure.

McI needs to break through this year. Shoulder injuries don’t get better with age, especially if surgery’s involved (I’ve had 4, SLAP Tear repair was 1 of 2 surgeries that ended my rugby playing days…). If the average career is 3 years, he needs to get his in now. I watched some of his playing; he can bring a load when he hits. Would like to see him step up this year. Rehab from surgery can help build stability around an injury (which is what it’s supposed to do…), but cannot “fix” the injury. So, I’d opine it’s do or die this year.

Helm and Filppula would be perfect for the taxi squad considering It won't exist next year.

This will be interesting, they both should move on but the Wings Organization has been known to be loyal to an extent. This move would set the tone for things to come.

I really don't think any of Detroit's UFAs are essential to re-sign. I would be cool bringing back Bernier, Gagner, and Ryan to continue their fine stopgappery for one more year. The rest I'd rather see move on, though I'm at peace with the reality that Glendening will probably be back.

This would work for me as well, but is contingent on what moves Stevie does this summer. LD and C need the most attention and goal I am not worried about because of the abundance of FA goalies.
But I expect some moves from someone before the cup is awarded. Whether it is a big trade or a not remains to be seen....but several teams need to try to more assets before the Ex-draft or risk losing them for nothing.
