why make trades when you can willingly take Branden Tanev and sign pending free agent Jamie Oleksiak to a huge deal. - Pomegrant
I’m just glad Vegas’s first draft pick didn’t pan out, finally caught some bad luck.
I really hate that team because it should have just been the yotes relocated. And then they get studs in the expansion draft and take advantage of every teams picks. |

I assume no trades or side deals announced because they did not want to rock the boat. Otherwise they could have drafted a better team. |
|
|
|
Seattle deserves to suck after that. |
|
|
|
A lot of experts said it would be this way. They said gm’s would be better prepared this time. - shvingter88
Yes, thats totally fine.....if they didnt willingly select players like Carsen Twarynski, Kurtis MacDermin, John Quenneville, Gavin Bayreuther and Tyler Pytlik without any kind of incentive/compensation lol. Or like passing on Jake Bean for Morgan Geeke, for instance. Thats the point everybody is making, they willingly selected much worse players than were available from specific teams without being paid to do so. |

No trades/side deals were announced because there are none lol. Seattle didnt make a single trade prior to the 10am deadline this morning |

The point is they botched the hell out of this entire expansion draft and didnt use any leverage they had to make deals lol. People are legitimately dumbfounded |

I oddly, actually agree with you, sort of. But, I’m more to the sense they “drafted mid to young aged players to build a system and not to bail out cap strained teams” though... in this manner, why would Seattle take a bad contract from ANYONE when they can simply make a trade after the expansion draft for a bad contract and sweenteners? I totally get what Ron Francis did here in a flat cap time. |

I get it if you don't want to take a chance on Max Domi because you think he's washed from his shoulder injury. But to take a guy you're not going to sign just so you free up a contract seems like nonsense. You could take a 4th liner on a cheap deal instead of taking multiple 3rd liners on cheap deals.
Also, I like Donskoi but if you're going to be taking Eberle why not take Landeskog and offer him a mega deal instead then take Bellows from NYI. They're committing to players who are on bad contracts for ~4 years so why not just spend slightly more for a much better player who can be the face of your team.
Why use so many picks on guys who were going to FA that weren't going to be re-signed by their teams in the first place? Just a puzzling draft all around and I get the feeling that Francis tried to hardball the league and everybody called his bluff.
edit: Why take Oleksiak and re-sign him to big money when you can just take Miller or McCabe from Buffalo instead of taking Borgen just so you can let him go. There are just a ton of minutes eaters available on cheaper contracts. Also, just coming out that Yanni Gourde's shoulder surgery will have him out until November so they won't take injured players from some teams but will from others and give the Lightning free cap relief for no compensation. He could have just taken Cal Foote then held the Lightning at gun-point for cap relief. What a (frank)ing joke. |

Finally, the trade freeze is lifted tomorrow at 1. Hopefully we get some early action! |

@GMillerTSN
For those wondering, Seattle’s side deals for the expansion draft—and there are apparently several—will be announced tomorrow after 1pm et when the NHL’s trade/signing freeze comes off.
Nice bait, Gord. |

Yeah its weird, the term "side deal" is a dumb term lol. Francis just said they weren't able to use their leverage in pre-expansion trades like Vegas was, and other GMs were just smarter/not willing to make the same mistakes this time around.
Still strange he wasnt able to atleast get picks or something, but I am expecting post-expansion player flips though |

Yeah, it's just total BS. Gord just trying to juice the numbers so people tune into TSN tomorrow.
Francis admitting they couldn't make moves and then they ended up drafted bad players on purpose because they apparently made deals. Yeah, okay. |

So leading up to the draft, are you guys expecting to make any kind of move? Imo if the Isles pick isn't moved/packaged in a deal tomorrow then we're making the pick. I dont see us moving it on draft day |

Somebody is bailing out Tampa tomorrow. Idiot GMs in this league can't help themselves and love the championship intangible BS.
I could see us trading the pick on draft day if it's in a move to trade up/down if there is a guy we're looking at still. I like what Fitz has done and it seems like he is down for wheeling and dealing. Don't think we should count him out on creative solutions. |

Yeah i think so too, it happens every time. Im hoping for a lot of league-wide action tomorrow and over the next couple of days through the draft. GMs have had 5 days to sit around and talk trade during the freeze, and theres a lot of names out there.
I really do think Fitz is trying to improve the team, and is involved in a lot of talk. Just hope some of that talk comes to fruition and something gets done |

Seattle drafted plenty of puck support... except they drafted no talent for those players to support.
It doesn't sound like there's been any trades... |

Maybe it’s because Francis is not a good gm? That could be a possibility. |

I think he set the asking price too high and expected teams to circle back, but he just chased everyone away. Not using the draft to get even some extra mid round picks is a failure. |

Nobody offering up Fleury and a 1st, or the Nick Suzuki pick to protect Enstrom... They were much better prepared this go-around. What a terrible broadcast production. Awkward, with all the selections being announced prior to the show. A real publicity flop, tho I doubt it really mattered that much.
They may have a better D core than us already tho, so that sucks. Won't be surprised if they make some serious additions via free agency, and trade away some assets like Gio, Vanecek, McCann and Doonskoi. At least then they can add some picks that most people thought they would have stockpiled yesterday. |

So who we drafting - dmarsden2988
My top 4:
Power
Beniers
McTavish
Hughes
McTavish really caught my attention as both Bedard and Wright said he was far and away their favorite teammate to play with at the U18's. It is always worth noting how the best players regard their peers and he was at the top of their lists. He is a big kid with most scouts comparing him to O'Reilly. I don't think you can go wrong with any one of those 4 players.

Well powers and bernier are going 1-2 unless something crazy happens
I feel the devils need to go defense in either Hughes or Clarke, preferably Hughes unless they are really high on eklund who played well with Holtz. Or if they want a scorer Guenther is a possibility
I heard Clarke may have knee issues so while ok now it could be an issue down the line |
