Why do we care about the Penguins?
I don't care who they lose.. The Leafs had McCann, didn't protect(which was a bad move, they should have protected him) and then lost him to Seattle. - PatC80
There was a little blurb running through the internet a couple of days ago, about how the first ever GM meeting Dubas attended (he wasn't GM yet) was so terrifying, he only spoke to Francis, "who he has known his entire life."
I'm wondering if maybe the whole McCann to Seattle through Toronto thing was pre-arranged. |

Not sure why they pulled that line apart after a good series vs the Oil. |

For the record, I'm an advocate for putting willie on the 3rd line.
Because if you're going to be committed to the big salaries, the Habs just proved to us that you have to find a way to spread your offence out and make it less containable.
Signed winger / Matthews / Beer can
Robertson / Tavares / Marner
Bunting / Engvall / Willie
Galchenyuk / Spezza / Simmonds
Muzzin / Hamilton
Sandin / Brodie
Dermott / Bogosian
Campbell
1B
At that point I don't hate Engvall at 3C as much, and I really don't see that massive of a difference between him and Kerfoot (minus the playoffs - and enough to warrant an extra 2.3 million).
And also for the record, this is far from my first preference. Its just clear they aren't trading Marner, and at that point this is the kind of hand you have to play.
Im no capologist but i believe at that point there's money there to shore up your weak areas. - joel878
So out of all the options I've read here, this is an example of a more balanced team:
Trade Rielly and Marner and Engvall = $17.5m + the current $9.4m = $26.9M of Cap.
Rielly to Kraken or ??? for picks/prospects/ELCs
Marner to Carolina for Nino Niederiter (1yr to UFA) and 1st/2nd/prospect? and early rights to Dougie
Sign Ullmark, Landeskog, Bunting and Hamilton
Landeskog ($8.5), Matthews, Nylander
Robertson, Tavares, Nino ($5.2)
Bunting ($1.5), Kerfoot, Micheyev
Brooks, Spezza, Simmonds
(maybe Galychenyuk)
Muzzin, Hamilton ($8)
Sandin, Brodie
Dermott, Holl
Campbell
Ullmark ($2.5)
$25.7M Cap in.
A lot more picks and prospects than they have which is going very unnoticed by some of you guys--no prospects or picks in the system to really of.
A much more balanced and heavier line up for playoff hockey.
GMing is easy. |

Trade Nylander and shave some extra $ somewhere to keep Marner.

No.
Note to Dubas: Don't trade the guy that actually lives up to the value of his contract. |

Wait until you see all the side deals Francis swung. I bet you'll have a different opinion by tonight.

Tanev was overpaid for a 4th line winger... Again, who cares about Pittsburgh.. They have their own HB thread - PatC80
C'mon Pat, you're better than that. Answer this. So the Pens lose McCann and Tanev. We lose Hallander and a 7th. Who loses more?
We've got to give up something here to the Kraken. I'm not the biggest Kerfoot fan in the world for sure, but he was better this year than last. Still very tradeable as is Holl. In fact, try trading him and see what you'll get for 2 mil. a year.
Not getting past the Habs in the first round still pisses all of us to some degree. But it's time to go forward. Tampa has healed that wound for me..
Let's see what Dubas has in the plans before next season. |

One trade I would love to see happen would be something built around:
Marner
Kerfoot
For
Garland
Dvorak
Kuemper
I don't know what Marner's structure is like for his contract but I assume its mostly paid bonuses so he and Kerfoot would help Arizona for cap with low actual money while also being fair value.
For Toronto it's an upgrade at 3C, gives you a good young winger who would probably be better suited with Matthews for playoffs, and fills your 1A/1B goaltending for the same total cap hit as Marner and Kerfoot (assuming Garland gets around 5-6 mil)
Then you can use Andersen's total 5 mil cap and apply it to the rest of the roster to improve where needed.
You can add picks/prospects to balance as needed but I would love a trade centered around this. |

We won't know until all the dust has settled. Maybe Francis is doing us a favour. We'll find out tonight.
Maybe acquiring McCann was simply to protect their current roster, for future moves.

I can't fathom why they didn't, unless there was a deal in place to entice them to pick Appleton.
I like Appleton. He's fast. He's tenacious. He has some finish.
He's also like 30% of other bottom-6 forwards out there. DeMelo is a top-4. |

I guess, they'll have a solid defense with Giordano, Dunn and Oleksiak.. The goaltending and forward group is questionable.. Their best forward could be McCann
