They have Eberle and Gourde. But yeah, they don't look scary on paper.

Great, their top line will be;

Ken Holland has signed 39 year old Mike Smith to a 2 year deal @ $2m / year.

Look. I don't care that he played well last year. That's great! Give him a 1 year deal. He's going to be 40 before the season ends. If he does okay next year, sign him again. No one over the age over 38 should expect multi-year deals. It's crazy. Why can't Edmonton just get a decent GM?

Keep in mind, Seattle took Brandon Tanev. Pittsburgh probably gave up some assets for this.

I don’t think Pitts had much else to take did they?

One trade I would love to see happen would be something built around:

Marner
Kerfoot

For

Garland
Dvorak
Kuemper

I don't know what Marner's structure is like for his contract but I assume its mostly paid bonuses so he and Kerfoot would help Arizona for cap with low actual money while also being fair value.

For Toronto it's an upgrade at 3C, gives you a good young winger who would probably be better suited with Matthews for playoffs, and fills your 1A/1B goaltending for the same total cap hit as Marner and Kerfoot (assuming Garland gets around 5-6 mil)

Then you can use Andersen's total 5 mil cap and apply it to the rest of the roster to improve where needed.

You can add picks/prospects to balance as needed but I would love a trade centered around this.

- torfc23

If you're trading Marner to them you gotta get Chychrun back.

I think you're still griping about McCann here - but if they'd taken Kerfoot, it would be Kerfoot-Gourde-Eberle.

It doesn't matter. It's still a bad first line.

Maybe there will be other deals that round this out and flesh it out and make this a better team.

It was bad contracts - Zucker (5.5), Pettersen (4.1) or guys like Scevior, Aston-Reese or DeSmith if I recall the list properly (I was looking at it a couple of hours ago).

So out of all the options I've read here, this is an example of a more balanced team:

Trade Rielly and Marner and Engvall = $17.5m + the current $9.4m = $26.9M of Cap.

Rielly to Kraken or ??? for picks/prospects/ELCs

Marner to Carolina for Nino Niederiter (1yr to UFA) and 1st/2nd/prospect? and early rights to Dougie

Sign Ullmark, Landeskog, Bunting and Hamilton

Landeskog ($8.5), Matthews, Nylander
Robertson, Tavares, Nino ($5.2)
Bunting ($1.5), Kerfoot, Micheyev
Brooks, Spezza, Simmonds
(maybe Galychenyuk)

Muzzin, Hamilton ($8)
Sandin, Brodie
Dermott, Holl

Campbell
Ullmark ($2.5)

$25.7M Cap in.

A lot more picks and prospects than they have which is going very unnoticed by some of you guys--no prospects or picks in the system to really of.

A much more balanced and heavier line up for playoff hockey.

GMing is easy.

- underhill14

Ullmark will cost imo at least 1 mil more than what you have slotted for him

No.

Note to Dubas: Don't trade the guy that actually lives up to the value of his contract.

- underhill14

We’re talking Willie, not Spezza or Hyman

Why? Why would dubas toss 2 assets to help out francis?
If he did, he should be fired immediately

- Fakepartofme

If anything it makes Dubas look worse, he could have just let Seattle take McCann from Pittsburgh and kept Hallander and the draft pick

Here's hoping one of those deals is Oleksiak and McCann for Kerfoot, Holl and Dermott

As I said - I would have kept him. I don't see him as a significant difference maker, but I would have kept a young RFA at less than $3m who can play 3C or slot into the top-6 over Kerfoot.

I also see why they had to value Holl as they did. His cap flexibility accompanied by his decent top-4 performance made him a necessary piece due to the flat cap and some larger contracts.

It's why the Leafs thread devolves into so much female doging. The cap is tight. The players are generally useful. The guy who is overpaid the most is untradeable (JT), and the guy who is overpaid the 2nd most is probably the 2nd best player on the team (Mitch). This was a team built on NOT having the cap go flat for several years.

You want to talk Leafy? That's (frank)ing Leafy. We finally get a good team and start building it with a financial plan that is completely demolished by a global pandemic. Did they overpay Marner? Yeah. Did they overpay or unnecessarily grab JT? Probably. But a global pandemic? Jesus, Karma. Back off.

So these little - largely inconsequential moves - are so amplified that we end up just . . .ticked off!

Pass, Coyotes own us in this trade.
- buddzy

You think so? You can definitely add picks/prospects to balance but I'm not sure how much more value wise Marner can bring back realistically given the few number of teams who could fit his contract.

I would fully support trying to get Chychrun. You would probably then have to move out Rielly later though. Too many left shots.
