I have heard conflicting information on this.
Some (I think cap friendly) said there were no "side deals" when it comes to the expansion picks. For instance - apparently Carolina did not need to pay Seattle anything to choose Geekie over Bean - Seattle just did that on their own.
The other "side deals" would be the players flipped after being selected in the draft. So Giordano reportedly going to the NYR. Those deals will be released at 1:00 today.
I hope I'm wrong - because if Seattle made some of these picks with no sweeteners... - Leafs43
Yeah I think some of these picks are odd as it stands. I hope they have more deals ready.
I do like Larsson and Oleksiak deals.

I find that strange as he was in Seattle and was up on stage as a new Kraken. |

Can confirm the Edmonton #Oilers have both 7 and 8 year contracts agreed to with Zach Hyman. EDM and TOR are working to execute a sign & trade which will pay Hyman 8 yrs. at around $5M. Salary comes in higher in middle of contract and includes some no move protection. #Leafs
This is Lucic 2.0 and I refuse to think anything different. - Leafs43
Hyman is a 5M player today. 2-3 years no.
4-5 years absolutely not.
6-8 its quite possible he’s barely an NHL player. |

THIS
Dubas has made a few good moves. Brody is an example. But lots of ‘meh’ and poor asset management. I will never understand the Malgin trade for example... - Hockey_Reverend
The only contract that Dubas handed out that was controversial and borderline stupid was Marner's. He's being paid about 2-2.5M more than he should be. Otherwise, there's not a bad contract to be found on the Leafs.
Also, Mason Marchment was never going to regularly play for this club. I think the organization is willing to give players a chance on other teams instead of burying them for years in the minors. Malgin is never going to be a regular on the Leafs but he did bring with him a helluva lot more experience.
Not a solid trade by any stretch of the imagination but not terrible either. Just much ado about nothing. |

4.6m x 5 is too much for Oleksiak
4m x 4 is a great deal for Larsson - mr.sir
I watched a lot of Edmonton games. Larsson is not that good. Just because he's right handed he's going to get a pay bump, but I mean I thought of him as around $3m. He's not dissimilar from Holl - he's better, but not significantly so. He's a better 5/6 who can slot up into the top-4 when required - but I found he was often outmatched in the top-4 role.
I think Dom at the Athletic rated him at $3.5m based on added value, so $4m is within the ballpark. |

So what do the Leafs get as compensation for the sign-and-trade (if it happens)? A sweet, sweet 2023 7th rounder to replace the one we flipped to the Pens? |

Word is it would be a 6th.
He can go to Edmonton next week on a 7 year deal that has a higher AAV, or go now on an 8 year deal that has a lower AAV and we get a late pick.
There is no compelling reason for a decent pick to be involved. |

That would be a very nice return and bit of business by Dubas. |

I think that's part of how they attract guys to sign with the Marlies - higher bucks, but also the understanding that the Leafs will help them advance their career, even if it isn't with the Leafs.
Having said all that, he's 26 years old and he's played 37 games in the NHL.
Is this really what Leafs fans are upset about?

It would be amusing if that 6th was Pittsburgh's from this year. Gotta keep that Penguins connection going! |

It kinda reminded me of a New Years Eve party - you go because you are told you will have fun, you pretend you are having fun, but you really just want to leave because you aren't having any fun. |

A lot of talk about what the Oilers are going to pay Hyman in term and $. I believe 7 years is the target and could climb as high as $5.5 aav. We will see. However, as of this second there has been no discussion with Toronto on compensation.

I think people look at the 6th pick because they have two this year. Id ask for the 4th round pick if Holland wants that extra 400k in space.

I would wager a larger guess on a 6th.

Yeah they need someone insignificant to complain about.
Marchment was going to be a better Hyman. We gave up too soon.
Durzi and Grundstrom aren't really doing anything yet in LA either.
