Thanks John.
Well no surprise but now that its here, its a bit sad. Hopefully he gets to "retire: here and maybe we get a chance to sign him down the road to make that happen.
Knowing that, whats the speculation on our D pairings? |

Gio has been a great player for the Flames, he's consistently showed up as training camp as the fittiest player. He's been an incredible defenceman getting better every year except the last couple. He looked terrible last year until paired with
Tanev. He's 37 and in the last year of his contract, there's no way in hell Treliving trades him at the trade deadline, not after all those years as a Flame. We have to remember the Flames have won 1 playoff series as him as our captain, and he missed that with injury. He will be missed but let's use that 7 mil cap space to make the d tougher to play against. |

It was the right thing to do but you can’t help but have a bitter taste in your mouth, especially after it was brought up that next season will be the first since 95 that one of iginla or gio weren’t in the opening night lineup. Also he’s only 51 games shy of 1000 which would have been nice to see in a flames uniform.
Now that it’s official I’ll be curious how we address the hole in our top 4. My first choice would be mike Reilly out of Boston but I also don’t think he’d be a fit in sutter’s system so I’d also be okay with Martinez, suter and Murray for the right term and dollars. I’m not too interested in trading picks/prospects for someone. |

I like savard but even though he had a bad season I think he’s going to be using tanev as a comparable going into free agency which is a little rich for my liking on the 3rd pair.
Also sutter wasn’t a huge fan of Vali so I think he’s going to be fighting more for a spot in the lineup against Mackey than he will be for a spot in the top 4. Will be interesting to see how it plays out nonetheless. |

Forgot about MacKay he did look good in his debut. I think the thing with Sutter is he's going to mold Valimaki, Dube and all the young guys into the players he wants them to be, and if that means the odd popcorn eating visit to the press box so be it. We have to remember Val was injured for most of 2 seasons. |

Treliving should be calling Carolina. If they're resigning Hamilton, they can't have that much cap space tied up on the blue line. Everyone but Slavin would probably be available for the right price. Either Pesce or Skjei would be perfect on the Flames. Gardiner is a pretty good high-risk high-reward option who probably wouldn't cost much to get, and Carolina would likely retain some salary. Even Bean is significantly better than what they currently have on the third pairing. |

In the last 12 months, the Flames have lost both Gio and Brodie for nothing. I guess Tre did a decent job with Brodie's cap space and now $7million from Gio ...the next few days are the biggest in Treliving's career imo, especially if he's trying to move one of the core players up front. |

I think Backlund's the favourite for the next captain, but we'll see |

True and I agree with holding these guys accountable but it’s also a steep slope when trying to mold guys into something they’re not. Not saying it won’t work out but you run the risk of busting these guys if let’s say you try turning Dube into a bottom six heavy grinder or vali into a shutdown defensive D since that’s just not their skill sets or strengths they will likely ever have.
I also don’t love that these young guys make one mistake and they see the press box and guys like ritche, leivo, nordstrom and Nestorov were allowed to make multiple a game and never got that same treatment. |

Skjei isn't that good of a defenseman. I live near Carolina and go to/watch a lot of their games. He's not BAD but I think the kids need to play. Maybe see what the price for Savard is in FA or Suter, if he'd be willing to go to Calgary to shore up the blueline. |

What kids? Kylington and Mackey haven't even shown that they can be everyday NHLers and are barely kids anymore. Valimaki definitely isn't ready to be in the top four, especially playing for Sutter. All three would still get to play if they brought in Skjei.
Savard and Suter would be great. But we're in Calgary. It's going to cost way too much to convince them to sign. |

It sounds like Giordano Is headed to the Rangers by days end. Ryan Strome In return. New York Post/Mollie Walker. |

Lucky break for the Flames. Most teams have had to give up high draft picks to dump the expensive contracts of players that have significant decline in their game. Flames gain nearly $7M in cap space by losing a guy who was at best a 3-4 Dman now. |

He may be declining but he was still the best defenseman on the team. And still led the team in ice time. |

I agree it's a bittersweet day. Hope he comes back to retire a Flame.
AS for the D, Sutter already called out the young guys, will be interesting to see what happens before October.

They can't be flipping Gio if they brought him in for the showcase. Can they? |
|
|
|
I don't think Gio will be traded to NYR. If Kraken was thinking about trading him, they would NOT introduce him personally on stage. He is their next captain. He may be traded at the trade deadline depending on the positioning of Kraken but not now. |

Yup, I think the same thing. Plus, they need he and Larsson on that back end to guide the kids

If anybody thought he was the best d on the team they would have either protected him or sent assets to Sesttle to take someone else. Many on here have complained of his quick decline. We're going to miss Gio but 7 mil in cap space opens a lot of other options.Tre did the right thing not protecting him.
Classy individual that I hope has a chance to resign here and retire a Flame. Should be some tears shed when he gives his fair well speech. |
