Players playing for dumpster fire teams often suck a lot more than they really should.

So you want to trade a bunch of assets and give out a UFA contract to find out if they can teach an 8 year NHL vet to do the primary activity his position requires? That's not a wise strategy in my books...rather a terrible one

I think Ristolainen is a good gamble.

I'll wait to see the contract and term but CHaracter right? He'll replace Tatar's goals, so I guess there's that

Based on what may I ask? It certainly can't be based on his play

His minutes will likely be 20-22 per game, I remember having the same concern with Petry when he was traded from EDM and look at where he is now

Petry was 4 years in the NHL, give or take, at the time. Risto is 8. At some point in time a player is what they are. Risto has one year left before UFA so trading for him means signing him to a long term deal at UFA prices. It's way too risky and likely to backfire with too minimal a payoff

Still think he's got good potential, big, can skate, just needs good mentorship.

Petry was 27 when he was traded to the Habs, Ristolainen is 26...

No matter his number of years in the NHL, playing for a god awful team for so long will do that to most players.

Potential? He's an 8 year NHL vet. When does his potential stop and his results speak for themselves? 8 YEARS

He started in the NHL at 18 years old, some guys don't get there before 23. Defenseman is also the most difficult position to play.

I remember him at the WJC he was dominating. Sabres just broke him.

This is going circular so let's agree to disagree but he's (frank)ing awful and trading for him would be a poor idea

i think Petry is an anomaly in this case. he's never been better than he is now, at 33. that's kind of unheard of. although maybe it's what happens when you spend the first 5 years of your career in Edmonton.

I am so up for it. We need offensive talent and Hoffman is a goal scorer. A bit like what Michael Ryder was but with more focus offensively. He’s not very good in his zone but I’m fine with that.

One reason I am neutral was his off ice issues when he was in OTT, long time ago but still

ESPN said that David Perron was close to be traded to the Habs before the freeze. Could that be done afterward?
