Well that was a bit underwhelming.

From what I've read it sounds like Ron Francis was getting a little ridiculous in his requests to not take certain players (ex. Giodarno). Teams simply did not want to play that game this time around hence no side deals. But then he really didn't choose what some perceived as the better option in a lot of cases.

I think unless the Kraken make additional moves they most likely will not have the early success the Knights did. We'll see.

I think most of Vegas’ success came from all the side deals, we’ll see how it plays out for the Kraken later today.

Sad truth… Seattle’s defense is already better than Chicago’s.

I think the NHL teams learned a valuable and painful lesson with the Vegas draft and many did not make the same mistake. Painful as it is to lose a valuable player, it can be worse to lose both a high draft pick and the number 2 choice from the expansion team's perspective. COVID probably didn't help Seattle either. Without it, the Hawks don't make the playoffs and Stan is protecting Nylander - they the Hawks may have lost somebody they didn't want to lose.

The one up side to the results of the draft for the Hawks is that there are a lot of teams down a decent defenseman. Maybe Bowman can work a deal for de Haan and/or Zadorov with one of those teams. I was really expecting the pick to be Gaudette, but while we all have high hopes that he can grow into an NHL player, he is still a big question mark to the league. So, I can understand why Seattle wouldn't take him. And why take one of the Hawks when you can get Oleksiak or Larsson cheaper?

Darth is right, Seattle's defense is already better than the Hawks. Actually probably better than several teams. As terrible as some of the teams in the Pacific are, Seattle would be able to finish 5th or 6th without making another move. But, I think there will be a ton of moves coming our way the next couple days. If we see a few weird one-sided deals in favor of Seattle, those are probably the "Don't take this guy" trades.

I was thinking the same, however I read here yesterday that the off season was over.

I think there is an oxymoron here somewhere.

Last expansion, gm's were saying please don't take this player. This expansion, with a flat cap, gm's were saying please take this player.

Yeah Darth is correct. A top 4 of Gioradano, Larsson, Olesiak and Dunn is nice on most teams, better than the Hawks. Add a solid goalie in Dreiger and they'll be in most games. Not much scoring upfront but Quenneville will go into Al Secord mode with Eberle and Beniers on his line and score 50 goals this year.

Oil are in desperation mode. From the news, I'm feeling like they'll have another Clarkson on their hands with Hyman if they sign him. Hawks need to steer clear of those types of signings, which strangely I feel Stan will stay clear of. Those types of signings are OK if it gets us a cup like Campbell and Hossa but we are far from it.

I guess we should thank Francis for a month worth of speculation on hockey sites.
Exactly correct that no one bit this time around.
Francis let past practice from the Vegas experience skew his side deals.
Do we BLAME that initial Cap freeing trade of Marc-Andre Fleury and more to the Knights for the tone setter?

(I am gonna bet that Francis had nibbles on side deals but was afraid start with a modest one that saved (say Morgan Geekie for Carolina as the continue to emerge as a challenger) a mid or low end player and the Karken got a late pick or farmhand that MIGHT develop.

I am certain the GOOD ole Boys network talked amongst themselves and didn't collude, but figured not all of the big names old stars and second and third lines were going to be selected b/c of the Cap hits and their age, and they all surmised Seattle was going to want Cap to buy them some first time UFAs/ or have room for some bigger trades that bring a star over.

I guess their cap space is thought of as a better bargaining tool than most of the high end avail bales they passed on.

Time for a new speculation:

If Seattle cannot trade a player back to his original team, could they have taken more than one with the idea of swamping them?

What difference a day make son many of the players!...other NHL clubs might have had interest prior to the draft, but NOT at the price of finding a protected spot.

If so, WHO is the first guy they trade?
Who do YOU think he is?

I am going to go with the selection from Pittsburgh, Branden Tanev.
I don't think the pens were throwing his name about a month ago, just thought they would find a way to keep him.

I was thinking the same thing....we all read per blue check marks Hawks were aggressively working the phones prior to the freeze. SO if they were trying to move Frankenstein and feel they have the ground work laid and are CLOSE, would they give up a pick and/or prospect to have Seattle take Quenneville so the Hawks can keep Z?

WE shall see this afternoon.

There were a number of reports (both national and from Chicago) out that the Kraken made no "side deals" with teams to either select or not select a certain player from said team. There certainly may be deals for players they picked from other teams which we will see later today.

What are your wishes or optimal endgames regarding the following players? I´ll give it a shot first...

Gaudette - 2 years, 1 million AAV

Hagel - 3 years, 1,75 million AAV

Hinostroza - 2 years, 1 million AAV...or let him go.

Kampf - 2 years, 1 million AAV

Nylander - 3 years, 1,5 million AAV

Suter - 3 years, 2 million AAV...or trade for an upgrade in a needed position.

Zadorov - 2 years, 3,5 million AAV...and a trade. Or a miraculous rise into a dependable top-4 destroyer. Yeah, I know...

I think its vital that Stan stays firm and cold in the negotiations because there are plenty of question marks on this list and no need to give anything extra to anyone.

Not sure how or if this would affect the Hawks but:

CHL sources say final details are being worked out with the NHL that will allow junior eligible players who played 20 or more AHL games last season to return to the AHL next season, rather than back to their major junior club. Bit more complicated, but thats the gist of it.

I think it will greatly depend on who Stan can trade, but I would guess that Vinnie is going to walk. Hagel will get slightly more than that (maybe $2.5?). Gaudette won't be on this roster. All the others seem to be about right.

Some of these are close to what I'd suggest:

Gaudette - 2 years @ $950,000
Hagel - 2 years @ 1,000,000
Vinnie - 3 years @ $1.25 million
Kampf - 2 years @ $1.25 million
Nylander - 1 year @ $850,000 (I wouldn't go beyond 1 year)
Suter - 2 years @ $2 million
Zadorov - 0 years @ $0

Maybe with the flatCap formats teams, Francis said, You are gonna have to pay up for me to take high salaried DeHaan or you will be stuck paying someone to take any of them.
Did the established clubs out-smart themselves what looks clearly reminiscent of that first original six expansion to twelve where as a kid I scoured the available list convince I knew the best player available on the bottom end of all 6 team's line-ups and instead the newbies to Aut Erickson.
(or for that matter the add two drafts that came after....)

Sure teams like Philly got tw goalies Doug Favell & Bernie Parentbut unproven and 3 & 4 on the Boston Bruind depth chart, and two decent goalies and Daccord, a slew of players the CAN be sent to the minors or allowed to develop and plenty of low cap hits.

I am betting more than one of the Kraken selections were take to be possible trade-in deals

and I am betting Yanni Gourde, three of the defenseman and both goalies are already
untouchables.

This gives you a look-see on the guys from past drafts and adds to the window on your 2021 picks who are close like McTavish, if it doesn't count in the ten games and your a pro.

There is a part of elite juniors who who need a higher level as junior is not a challenge or as much a learning ground.
