Weird. I thought Oilers won the Neal/Lucic trade?

Nobody wins those kind of trades, just the stiffs (players)...

In some weird world getting a player that you can pay $2M a year for four years to not play for you and giving up a 3rd round draft pick and paying $750K to the player you sent away is a landslide win over a team getting a gritty player that is an overpaid 4th line winger. Lucic can at least contribute on the ice.

The deal ends up costing the Oilers $2.75M in cap space for the next two seasons and a 3rd rounder.

"I thought the Oilers won the Lucic trade?"

They did. It was always about being able to get out from underneath the buyout proof contract Chiarelli signed Lucic to.

They didn't win anything, nothing but losers in that deal on both sides (from the time both were originally signed, actually).

It was always going to be a lose/lose deal. For everyone except Lucic and Neal.

The buyout is just spread out over a longer term. When factoring that in, plus what's still being paid to Lucic and the cost of a replacement, it's at best a wash.

That's not really true, you can easily replace what Neal brought with a sub 1 mil signing, or bringing one of the kids up.

Definitely sub 1 million. Add it all up and it's at best a draw. I don't think Calgary wants a do over on that trade.

I could see Holland kicking tires on Danton Heinen. Has some skill and can play up and down the lineup. He wasn't qualified by the Ducks today.

Lol. Not good enough to make the Ducks but you think he’s a fit on the oilers…

The Ducks also protected Nicolas Deslauriers, so let’s not be hasty and assume they’re run by a competent group.

They just didn't want to give him a raise on the 2.8 mil per. I wouldn't want him at that price tag either, but half that would be fine.

Looks like they have they have options to round out the forwards. I think the top priories should be to replace Larsson. The Nashville FA Erik Gudbranson....6'4 217lbs right shot and played 18 mins a night in Ottawa? Buffalo goalie Linus Ulmark looks to like a solid bet? any thoughts?

So they pay Neal and Lucic for 2 seasons and Neal for 4 seasons plus gave up a 3rd (that Calgary turned into 2 picks)

Flames obviously won...in 2 seasons they will have no cap hit at all and the two prospects. Lucic is still a useful NHL player...Neal is gonna be out of the league IMO

Gudbranson is a horrible idea. A brutal D man that GM's seem to love, and fans hate. Ullmark would be a decent option for the net, but we have to get rid of Koskinen somehow. But its Holland, so you know he's looking at Anderson, Jones, or Holtby.

4.5 per. Not horrible, especially at just 3 years, but that doesn't really address the defensive needs on D. Right side of Barrie, Bear, Bouchard.
