The NHL financials just suck. The cap takes a way from the game bc its such a focal point every offseason and season
- nyrangers2

It level sets the field to a certain extent. Teams will always find way within the rules to circumvent or bend the rules.

what sucks is that team's were making financial decisions in 2019 and early 2020 based upon very reasonable expectations that the cap would be going up significantly in the coming years

and now because of that, Chris Kreider and Jacob trouba are totally evil bastards

This is very true. Don't understand why the NHL isn't helping alleviate some of this for teams

If they handed one of those free buy-outs to all the teams you think Trouba or Kreider would get it?

I think at this point, there is a non zero chance CK would get it. Really, alot of the bad contracts are off the book, and Shatty and G's dead cap money have gone significantly down.

Oh man, that’s a really good question.

I would think they go with Kreider because a LW is easier to replace on a cheaper contract than a RD. That said, Trouba’s larger AAV might be the kicker if they go that way.

Both positions have really strong organizational depth though, so 50/50, could go either way.

I'd love to see them buy out Kreider.
...and then immediately sign him to 4 x $4M!!

I think free buyouts are a negative and it would only put 32 players on the market where some might not play again.

I would like for the NHL to implement a Homegrown clause where a team gets a 10% cap rebate on a players contract, if that player is with their original entry level deal team. Meaning we could get a discount on Krieder and a new deal for Fox mean savings as well.

In reply to the tweet about Nathan MacKinnon's diet that was posted in here yesterday:

Nathan MacKinnon. Eats nothing but kale, broccoli, and spinach for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

In his defense, I mean Tampa is making a mockery of the rulebook. Gotta be some obscure loophole

They're really not. They're definitely not the first team to trade for players so they can put them on LTIR. Leafs did it with Clarkson and Horton. They just didn't win a Cup

Oh, I totally knew that it would be illegal. Doesn't mean I don't wish they could do it!

Tampa is being penalized for drafting well. The league should be doing its job to make sure the players get fair value but the organization isn't gutted.

The hope is that is a few years the Rangers are in a position like Tampa and it would suck to have to let go of guys just because they developed.

That was a springboard for sure, though I think people forget how talented those mid 90s teams were. I think they still could have won in 95 without Stevens, they were just loaded.
