Cap hit and actual money are 2 very different things.
- TheHank

Boss had clearly stated the remaining amount of money. Not cap hit. "11 million remaining on the contract" does not mean 5.8 million cap hit

Quick is owed $3M this season and $2.5M next season in actual salary for a total of $5.5M in actual salary.

Quick won't be collecting $11M total the next 2 seasons.

Only half of that.

Math is indeed hard.

They're not trying to lose. They're going to try to win with young players. But they're not 2014'ing.
- TheSabresTaco

This isnt going to be tmgm and McDavid, but the roster this far does not indicate "they're not trying to lose".

Here's an analogy:

Employer Adam's tells his management team to clear a 30 acre field.
Adam's only hires young guys who have very little experience clearing fields.
Some guys have helped their parents cut their lawns, thru their teenage years. Not much else.
Adams hires a great lawn cutting coach, but not exactly a professional field clearer.

Everyone is definitely trying to clear the field.
The inexperienced management and workers trying their best.
Problem is , they have no power tools ... only guys learning on the job, from other inexperienced employees.

Again, they are definitely working hard at not losing, but upper management has to see, they hired people who try as hard as they can, but they will not succeed.

If it's a good enough package for Eichel so be it you figure out Quick later, especially if some solid youth is coming back.

I want to remind everyone that I don't agree with Adams. But I see why he's doing it.

He wants to see guys sink or swim, because he doesn't want to suck in a few years. He needs to see who should stay and who should go. Part of his, I think post UFA chat, was talking about how he needs to see how the younger guys perform and evaluate whether they should stay or 'move on'. UPL fits into that. Perhaps too quickly, but I know he's in that section. I think he's rushing a rebuild by forcing guys into difficult positions that they can show they can handle.

Proof of this can be seen with his FA acquisitions. There are no players in the org where you can say, why did he bring in so and so guy to steal minutes from, say, R2 or Mitts or whatever. He kept their lanes wide ass open.

- TheSabresTaco

Very good post .

Completely agree.

That's why I see the franchise holding off on obtaining " assets" from eichel.

Cap dumps would not fit in.

Sure, nobody retains salary, but this could be perfect for getting a true top prospect for eichel.

Byfield for example

4 or 5 teams that have always been keeping tabs. Sabres could make a good deal right now, Adams is doing good, Sabres are gonna get a decent haul, might not be what some want, but it's gonna help us.

Ryan Miller:

100 NCAA games played
160 AHL games played

UPL:

23 ECHL games played
25 AHL games played

Now if he's absolutely lights out and proves he's ready, that's a different conversation. Even still, it wouldn't hurt to give him another year of proper development

- Hank Balling

Clearly I could come up with a list of guys who played in the nhl before 22 years old that were successful.

The 40 year old goalie and 2 way contract goalie lead me to believe they have thoughts of given upl a legit opportunity to win the job.

I'd be excited to see him start the season.

Pretend we're going young and fast..

i agree with that. Perhaps I should have said, if Quick ends up here, I don't think he'd stay very long. I think Adams would want Brown for leadership though. Just speculation.

$11 million...?

https://www.capfriendly.com/players/jonathan-quick

- kingcong39

Am I missing something?
5.8 x 2 = 11.6 million cap hit over the last 2 years?

11 million?

11.6 million?

Do be considered a " cap dump", guys a generally playing much worse than their remaining term correct?

Need salary back. Or they need to probably hand out a multi million contract to a bad player in UFA.

Would much rather have Brown, just think Quick with 2yrs left helps them more. Love to bring the hometown boy home.

If he looks dynamite then go for it.

Getting 50 starts in Roch during a season like this would be my plan either way though. Best case scenario, he's terrific and the Sabres finish 25th and pick 8th, worst case he looks bad because the team bleeds high danger chances and we learned nothing other than he's not ready

Facts have no place here.

4 years, $125 million for Kahun.
