This is going to be interesting and something I’ve though about for a bit. Driedger now finds himself in a similar situation he was in while with the Panthers.

I’d be surprised if Grubauer wasn’t the starter. So that would make Driedger the backup - but I’m pretty sure he signed there thinking he’d be the #1 guy.

What a twist.

i don't think that a goalie with so few NHL starts (Driedger) would have expectations of being the undisputed #1 goalie on any team

if they did that seems like an attitude problem to me

I wouldn't think he assumed he would be the undisputed #1, but considering the available expansion options he could of easily assumed that he would have had a decent shot of grabbing the #1 spot with good play. Now, just based on Grubauer's salary after signed as a UFA, he is the de-facto #1. I would suspect Driedger couldn't have predicted that happening when he signed on.

Driedger was a free agent; he voluntarily signed with Seattle after a period of discussion and negotiation. He was not an average expansion draft pick without say-so.

So the issue is, did Seattle management lead Driedger to believe he'd be the #1 guy? That was impression I got on draft night when they paraded him on the stage as the first player introduction.

Did management tell him that they were still looking for a #1 goalie to bring in above him, but he'd have a shot? Or, did they pull the rug out from under him with a move out of left field?

I'd say the dynamics of those pre-signing conversations with Seattle management are critical to what Driedger expected, assumed, or knew. To label him as a potential attitude problem is inappropriate.

yes and i don't think he has an attitude problem, i think he expects to compete for starts, just like i think he expected to before the Grubauer signing
