Hurt by Cash and Landslide by Smashing Pumpkins are probably my top two. The hipster one that I put up there is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by STRFKR - Victoro311
Fantastic choices. I would say that I appreciate Landslide by SP more than Fleetwood Mac, as well. I am a BIG Johnny Cash fan, however, I am an even bigger NIN fan. I liked JC's version, but I definitely prefer the original.
Dumb, yet honest question, is the 311 in your handle in reference to the band? I guess I always assumed so.

Anyone been listening to the covers from the Metallica Blacklist album? If not, you have to.
Cage the Elephant doing The Unforgiven, St.Vincent doing Sad but True and Chris Stapleton doing Nothing Else Matters have been my favorites. - Rinosaur
I’ve been working my way through it but I’ve really liked Volbeat’s version of “Don’t Tread on Me” and The Hu performing “Sad But True” just because of how unique it was.
Also, it was mentioned already but I dig the collaboration by Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, and Chad Smith (aka Will Ferrell) on “Nothing Else Matters”. |

Haha yes actually. I was obsessed with them in high school. I used to be a bass player (basically haven't touched it since going to college in 2011), and absolutely (frank)ed with P-Nut. I still like them, but I definitely out grew them to a certain extent.
Landslide was just destined for Billy Corgan's emo schtick. |

I was not shocked to see Volbeat there. I always said they're like the Danish Metallica. I haven't heard The Hu's version of Sad But True, but I'll make my way there.
Cage the Elephant's Unforgiven is so good. I can't stop listening to it. The Vishal Dadlani version of Unforgiven is also really good. |

Since we are on the subject, name your favorite covers of all time. I can think of a few that I really prefer over the original. Off the top of my head:
1- Sound Of Silence by Disturbed
2- Live And Let Die by G-N-R - Brayn
My favorite cover is Jimi's cover of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Rare occurrence where the cover is better than the original IMO. |

Very good ones, indeed.
I brought my cassette copy of NIN's Downward Spiral (which has Hurt on it) to grade 6 with me, the teacher took it and I had to have a chat with guidance councilor about it and its contents. She deemed me fit, happy and healthy hahaha. My music taste and interests were a little different and more mature than the rest of the class it seemed.... |

tweeter and the monkey man by the headstones was always one of my fav covers. |

I’ll have to check out Cage The Elephant’s version of “Unforgiven”. Honestly impressed with how many bands/artists they were able to get and all the different styles of music they were able to pull together. Really good stuff so far.
I’m a Volbeat fan so as soon as I saw they were doing “Don’t Tread on Me” I was pumped haha

On this subject, did you guys know that Train did an entire cover album of Zeppelin II? One of the more outrageous things in music in recent memory that just flew completely under the radar. |

Gonna have to disagree. I hate that guy's voice lol
I just don't like that whole "butt rock" sector of rock, i.e. Creed, Nickleback, Puddle of Mud, Shinedown. |

I really can't believe Norm MacDonald passed away. He's in my top five favorite comics of all time. |

Just listened, and agree. It's much cleaner and crisper than the original.
Which goes onto support my (extremely unpopular) theory that Led Zepplin, while innovative and influential, are overrated musically, particularly as a studio band. And please FFS do not ever call them "heavy metal."
Edit: I'm also not saying they're no talents hacks a la Nickleback or anything. I just think they're very good musicians, but not worthy of the God pedestal they're put up on. |

I love Led Zeppelin but I also think they hijacked their music from other artists and simply performed it better lol
Stairway to Heaven
Whole Lotta Love
Dazed and Confused
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Etc.
There's a handful of hits that ripped off or copied other songs, not that I give a poop though, I still rock out to 'em. |

Oh no doubt they're a good band. Just not, IMO, as good as a lot of people make them out to be. |

I don't think you can just trot over being innovative and influential so casually. Being innovative and influential is such a huge part of what makes a great band. Bonham definitely is in no way overrated and neither is Page. Yeah, Train is more clean and crisp, but there's something to be said for how raw Led Zeppelin was while still have incredible musical arrangements. Production just wasn't the level it is now and I'd also go on to say that today's production is almost too sterile.
I'm not one of these music snobs who believe it's either analog or nothing, but I think if Zeppelin came out today you'd probably have a totally different product. Very few bands had today's level of production during that time. Steely Dan (who I can't stand) and Jethro Tull were only a handful of bands who really tried to reach that extreme level of production. |

When I say cleaner and cripser, I'm talking more about how well it's played. Led Zepplin and Led Zepplin 2 are far from mistake free, where as the Train version seems better. Of course the production quality has progressed, but I agree about the "rawer" sound being preferable. |

Been listening to a lot of blues lately. Albert Cummings, Daniel Castro, Rory Gallagher, Adam Holt and what not. |
