I dunno, wouldn't applying that literally equate to not being able to talk about something that isn't hockey-related?

It’s gonna be interesting to see if KK explodes as a left winger in Carolina...if he pans out great for the Canes, if he doesnt the genius move becomes heck of a mistake
- Karine Hains

Hindsight is 20/20 obviously, it'll be easy to say who won/lost this situation in a few years. That said, with what we've seen so far, I have a really hard time believing KK will for sure reach his potential and be a 50 point two way center. Even the "late bloomer" elite centers have destroyed KK's total at this point in his career, so that only 21 excuse holds no water for me. Ie Patrice Bergeron and Barkov looked way better at 21. (frank) even Galchenyuk (and we know just how well that turned out) had more to show at the same age. We were desperate for a center in the draft, reached out, and fell over like fools. It is what it is. I would be pretty surprised if he is any more than a bust. If he makes us eat poop hard, I'll admit I was wrong.

not saying he's gonna be a star for sure, but just because Bergeron or Barkov had better numbers doesn't mean KK can't improve his game. not everyone has the exact same learning curve, so yeah the fact that he's only 21 should definitely be considered.

I guess so. Mark Schifele is another one I found considered a late bloomer who had more impressive stats at 21. KKs absolute potential is an ok 2nd line center, so walking away from the 6 million to *maybe* get a meh 2nd line center had to be the right move. I could very well be wrong, I certainly was when I said Ka(frank) would be my last choice to draft between him, KK, and Zadina. Holy poop was I wrong.

I think he'll be a very decent 2nd line C (which some could consider a disappointment still for a 3rd overall pick) but yeah at the moment Bergevin made the right call, that 6 million would've definitely messed up their salary cap structure. plus it seems the coaching staff had problems setting expectations with him, if we look at what Stéphane Waite was saying it sounds like it was time to move on.

Yeah best of luck to him, I'm not saying we couldn't have used him as a #2 center, but waiting to see if he develops into that is far from certain. At the cost of 6.1 million a year, it clearly isn't with it worth it to gamble on that, especially with the compensation we got not to take that gamble. Still poor asset management for a 3rd overall pick, though the mistakes were the Aho offer sheet, and likely also drafting him at 3rd overall.

agreed with the pick, you should always draft the best player, and not necessarily by need, but I don't find the Aho offer sheet was a mistake, it was a legit and decent offer that wasn't trying to (frank) over the canes, considering what the player was worth. sure Bergevin made a comment about the Canes being in a financial pickle with their self-inflicted cap, but it was Carolina's response that was childish and overblown, although somewhat entertaining lol

The whole thing was certainly entertaining, what I mean though is it created beef with Carolina, with no realistic chance of actually acquiring the player. I mean front loaded or not the contract value was very fair. What I think pissed Carolina off is we prevented them from buying his UFA years at a good price, which led to the retaliation. Also Bergevin's moronic comments about the owner being a cheapskate. The retaliation offer was certainly childish I agree, KK has shown absolutely nothing to show he's worth that 6.1 million, and saying it's for potential is a big stretch.

I get what you're saying, I just feel offer sheets should perhaps become more of a common thing across the league, could make things interesting. if it was already the case we probably wouldn't even be talking about the Aho one.

It'd certainly be more spicy than what has been alot of meh off seasons after the big fish UFAs are gone. That said, if Bergevin is going to piss people off, he better make them legitimately think too.

yeah, maybe they should've beefed up the offer, MB said they were very confident about it but oh well, mistakes will be made loll. besides, if you're right about your assessment on KK then you should be happy about the offer sheet, if it wasn't for that KK would still be here

I still would have liked to have seen him develop on our team, like I said we definitley need a legit (or rather better) 2nd line center. That said, not at that price tag with the uncertainty.

off this topic but if you have a moment and want to see a ref completely take a thread off the rails, check out yesterday's comment section in the leaf thread.

someone needs to take dozzer's status away. i know he had some serious medical issues and some brain surgery but holy hell, the guy has major anger issues.

Drouin's interview was scheduled on the day of the election, did they decide it probably wasn't the best timing if they wanted to create a buzz? The way Chantal was talking, it seemed to me it was just going to be moved, not completely canceled, but then, what do I know...
