That was the one thing I noticed from the stands, that the Pens forecheck was all over the Lightning. They had no time or space. Forced into quick decisions all night, which mitigated the rush attempts like crazy. Good to see Jarry lookin' calm and collective back there too.
I've seen games like this happen many times over the years. The defending Cup champs open the season with their newest banner raising, then precede to stink up the joint with a poor performance. That's because they use up all their emotions in the banner raising, then have nothing left for the game and come up flat.
Crazy seeing a scrub trying to deke and lose the puck on a clear breakaway with no one within 10 feet of him. If only he was an NHL player like Brian Boyle in the same situation, he would have scored. Probably why Pittsburgh dropped him like a bad habit.

Yeah penguins fans have never seen a banner raising before.
So I have a +- question in regards to when the goalie is pulled. Does that act similar to a powerplay/penalty kill for goals or is it not a factor? Someone got myself confused cause 'well its a man advantage right?' and now need clarification.

Nah it's still counted like if it was 5v5. Still get a minus if the Pens score into an empty net. Still get a plus if TBL scores with the goalie pulled. One of the reasons +/- is a dumb stat.

Nope. One of the many flaws of this horrible stat.
I agree with pulling the goalie, but thought it was a mistake to pull him again after they scored the 1st one. Still like 5:30 left, prob shoulda waited til ~3min to pull him again. Most likely doesn’t matter, but the fact that we got one back almost immediately after they scored, totally killed their chances.
RW: "The Penguins played an awesome game. They came out hard, took it to the defending champs. The forecheck was great, they generated tons of chances, and the goaltending held up when needed.

I think the biggest takeaway from the game last night was Jarry. The Pens played well in front of him, but they also played well in front of him against the Islanders, so the fact he didn't let up any weak goals was great. He was calm, poised and had good rebound control. It's just one game, but if this is a sign of what Chiodo has worked on with him then it can be huge for the Pens.

I love the speed and chaos Tanev brings, but based on what I saw from McGinn last night I'm Team McGinn. I think he's going to be, for lack of a better word, controversial on this board because he will be forever compared to Tanev, but he's a better hockey player than Tanev. He quietly did so many good things on and away from the puck.

Tanev is just an echl talent based on his decision to dangle on a breakaway. He's just a bit overrated because he's fast and hits people, but an echl talent none the less.

I don't know that I'd go that far. I think Tanev is a decent NHLer, but I do agree his speed overshadows his real abilities. Regardless, McGinn is better at hockey.

Lol at Simon alone on the goalie trying to dangle, then Boyle shows the difference between an echl player and an nhl player in the same situation. Good game by everyone last night but that was funny. - Grinder47
Just using Grinder's means for analysis of players, that's all.
