Thanks for the great insight to the game Jacob. I agree that the lack of a proper defensive system has been the Jets biggest problem for years. I don't understand why the coaches don't try a different system as this one isn't working. Its not the personal or the back checking but the lack of positional play. Also when the Jets are ahead they go in a defensive shell and allow their opponents free run in the Jets end, which relies on Helly to continuously bail out the team. This team wins on superior talent and can never be expected to out coach their opponents.

Does Charlie Huddy have a lifetime contract? The play in our zone and the shots we give up year after year, no matter who is playing is on the coach.

Huddy is a HUGE problem and seems to have a free pass

Very good breakdown. Connor Hellebuyck is a fantastic goalie, but I expect some lower stats this season based off of this start. No fault to him, but rather the system in front of him. I am not frequent in following advanced analytics, but I am sure the high danger chances are extremely high on Hellebuyck so far. Seems like every goal is coming from an open guy out front.

Hi Jacob, thanks for article. Most of us regulars here have given up hoping that Maurice would take a risk with a young talent, change an assistant, or settle for conventional systems that work.

The steady growth (commendable) of the team fro the time of his arrival until 2017 is long gone, the challenges and strengths the Jets have now are not new in spite of personnel changes. We mostly agree that Maurice has taken the team as Farr as he is able to. He hit his ceiling a few years ago and is here only by the grace of Chevy (Chipman if you go for Ross’s theory). In between every success the Jets have is the valley of wasted opportunities and stubborn complacency, now littered with the bones of the former core.

So, Comrie will be getting a start on the road trip. Hope he does well, for the team's sake and his own. I remain unsure that he is a NHL caliber goalie, but the guy certainly gets an "A+" for perseverance.

The shots allowed is still very concerning as we were supposed to have a revamped D this year.

Well it looks like Forbort has been a solution for the Bruins as is indicated by their blog. Too bad we did not have a defensive system where he would have thrived like he is in Boston, here in Winnipeg.

Also great to see Kyle Connor named first star of the week. It looks like he does just find without Scheifele and Wheeler, as that has always been a knock against him.

I am hopeful that the Connor-Dubois-Svechnikov line sticks together. I am also hopeful that we see Ehlers and Copp with Scheifele.

Yes, agree with what you're saying here.

Would like to see on Scheif's and Wheeler's return:
Copp-Scheif-Ehlers
Connor-PLD-Svechnikov
Stastny-Lowry-Wheeler
Harkins-Gustafsson-Vesalainen

but doubt that will happen.

PP1 - Connor-Scheif-Ehlers-PLD and Pionk
PP2 - Copp-Stastny-Wheeler-Morrissey and Schmidt

???
