Lame. Koivu was not a "retire the number" type of player. He was an above average player who wore the Wild jersey the longest, that's it

Retiring numbers Is weird and stupid!!!!!! The Gretzky number retired In all arena's Is flat out retarded!!!!! Also, eventually you run out of numbers and have to start over.

I wouldn't mind a banner with a player name or anyone from the organization who's deserving. I'd put a Jacque Lemaire banner up before Koivu. Retiring numbers Is old and tired.

Well whatever. Supposedly, Koivu has been working out in Finland and wants to play again. He says he’s hoping for a call when free agency opens. If no one calls, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wild sign him to a one day contract so he can retire a Wild.

Oh yes! The one day contract silliness! Koivu was a great 3 zone player and a 3rd line Center. Not a HOFer.

I don't mind this. How does retiring a players # affect anyone negatively. I was never Mikko's fault that the Wild brass never brought anyone else in that could take over the "star" position from Koivu...or kept them (Gaborik). Yeah, he was miscast as an NHL star, but he was the best the Wild had for years. And he played the game the right way. There were night where Koivu took over a game. Not very often, but there were a few games. I think it's right to retire his #9. Koivu was the closest thing to a star on the Wild roster that they ever had. He gave everything he had each night, trying to be that superstar that the Wild brass wanted him to be. He just wasn't it. Now, if they could just get him to teach Kaprizov how to do the exploding shoulder, his legacy could live on.

Interesting points. I do agree that the Wild retiring Mikko's number is the right thing to do. Mikko while not a superstar, was the epitome of a captain. He led by example. Reminds me of Dirk Graham back in the day. Not the flashiest players but he was a leader and the players respected him. I believe that was also part of Mikko's legacy. He did always shine in the shootout with that forehand backhand that was unstoppable even when you knew that was his move. Congrats to #9.

Kind of cool it’s the Preds so Granlund can be a part of it.

To run out of numbers, wouldn't you have to retire a total of 99 Jerseys.?
Even if they unretired 99, do You really think anyone would wear it ?

That’s because he’s focused on playmaking. He has 3 assists already.

I thought the Islanders emotions got the best of them. They wanted Zach because J.P. played there. They already have a 4th line that’s played together for years so I knew he would be playing on the 3rd line. I knew he wouldn’t be able to cut it. He’s prolly hanging around to try for the 7 goals he needs to reach 400.

Zach was one of my favorites when he was in his prime. I admired his work ethic and the way he went to all the dirty areas as a smaller guy. If the Isles season becomes lost, I look for them to give Zach PP time to try to get him his 400.
