The Jets should have been on the phone with Barry Trotz as soon as they found out he was released from NYI. Barry did great work in Washington and that team was definitely not boring.

Barry coaches the boring (but very effective) style. In Washington, he had Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Backstrom and Carlson and more of an offensive team than New York, but still managed to get a lot out of the Isles players. He has such a valuable structure to his coaching ways. He should 100% be the Jets primary target

Question for mailbag,

I’m very interested in Rikard Gronborg for coach.
Is their a way to see what coaches have the best winning percentage / success who have never coached in NHL. If you could look at College, AHL, Europe, and Canadian Junior. Are there others flying under the radar? Mike Velucci maybe?

Without looking it up, I do know there are some fantastic coaches in NCAA Div 1 that haven't coached in the NHL. Brad Berry may be the best coach outside of the NHL. His record with North Dakota is 162-77-25 over his 7 year tenure. Mind you, lots of NHL calibre talent had passed through here, but their talent pool goes far beyond the drafted players, including NHL free agents like Jordan Kawaguchi and Reise Gaber. I think the coach is a big part of this. Sure, you could look at him as a great developmental coach, especially for the heard of Senators prospects that just came through (Sanderson, Pinto, Bernard-Docker, Kleven) but he has done some very special work in North Dakota

How does Berry's record at UND compare to Dave Hakstol's record there?

Dave Hakstol
289–143–43 WIN% 60.8% PTS% 65.4%

Brad Berry
138–63–24 WIN% 61.3 PTS% 66.7%

It's very similar, with Berry having a very slight edge, but Hakstol has done it over a longer period (roughly twice as many games).

Jets have skill but the team defense is lacking. I think Trotz is overrated but he might be the perfect fit.

Team defense as in structure? I agree. The whole bottom 6 is capable of playing very good defensively, and the Jets have a plethora of capably defenseman who struggled to play together this year. Trotz could turn this team into something spectacular.

Trotz also did really well coaching Schmidt in Washington. It’s what really raised Schmidt’s stock.

Thanks for info.

That's the thing, you can do wonderfully well wherever you are - IF you have the horses. NCAA or NHL.

Hakstol hasn't exactly looked like Scotty Bowman in the NHL, but give him some more skilled players, and who knows?

Be funny if the Jets hired Trotz and the Islanders signed Paul Maurice!

I know it isn’t one of the sexier pieces of hardware given at the NHL Awards but I would be very surprised if Kyle Connor does not walk away with the Lady Bing Trophy. Which will at least provide some recognition for his excellent season.

Yeah. Structure wise. The current roster in Winnipeg is far more capable than they performed this year. I honestly think they have one of the better overall rosters. For whatever reason, they could not get it together. They have skill, size, grit, but they lack structure and accountability. Maybe even the right leaders. I hate to say it because I am a massive fan of Wheeler but maybe he isn't captain material. Same could be said for Scheifele

It sounds like Connor is actually the favorite to win the Lady Byng. Don't know, but with 40+ goals and I believe four penalty minutes, I think he's a "shoe in."

With the order of the Entry Draft being finalized tonight (barring trades), wonder what the Jets chances are from moving up from 14th. With draft being in Montreal and the Habs having the best chance odds wise, I think they go #1.

Used to be far more exciting a time when there were three chances of moving up (not two) and you could actually go, say, from #16 to #1. Now you can only move up maximum 10 spots. Much better before as far as interest sake!

While I agree, the excitement was a lot better before, the new setup is much better for the league. There is no reason a team like Vegas should have a chance at Shane Wright this year, just because they missed the playoffs by a win or two. Only having 2 lottery balls, on the other hand, I am not as big a fan of. I liked the system with top 3, but to each their own.

In terms of Connor, he absolutely has a shot at winning the Byng, but it is such a hard trophy to predict for. If I had the opportunity to vote my top 5 on a ballot for each trophy, I would vote: (except the Byng, as again, there are so many factors that honestly, I don't even know who to consider at the top)

Hart:
Auston Matthews
Igor Shesterkin
Connor McDavid
Johnny Gaudreau
Jonathan Huderdeau

Norris:
Cale Makar
Roman Josi
Victor Hedman
Adam Fox
Charlie McAvoy

Vezina:
Igor Shesterkin
Ilya Sorokin
Jacob Markstrom
Juuse Saros
Freddy Andersen

Calder:
Moritz Seider
Michael Bunting
Lucas Raymond
Trevor Zegras
Anton Lundell/Jeremy Swayman (that ones a toss up)

Jack Adams:
Darryl Sutter
Dean Evason
Mike Sullivan
Andrew Brunette
Bruce Boudreau

With a Trotz behind the bench and Huddy banned from the province lol…..the Jets D could be transformed without moving a player in or out.

That’s what a good system and a BUY-IN by the players can do.

I can’t imagine 55 under Trotz but he has had players like him before and when they bought in they were successful.

Watching the Isles this year beat the Jets in Wpg even my wife said the Isles looked disciplined and not panicking in their end…….that’s all we do is panic in our end and give up quality chances.

Important summer for the Jets

Scheifele could work amazing under Trotz. He wouldn't be scared to bench him if needed, but also wouldn't play him against the toughest matchups defensively. Scheifele needs a coach that will use him the right way. Scheifele has defensive abilities, but really lacks the motivation, and when he is put in a position to fail, while also succeed offensively, he will get frustrated

I actually can buy 55 under Trotz. I think he will excel with Barry as coach. If Barry is hired, I am hopeful that he brings back Huddy. I think Huddy makes for some interesting comedy.

Agree with all your top choices - except - I would take Josi over Makar. While both had fantastic years, I just feel that Josi was more valuable to his team in that there is no way the Preds make the playoffs without Josi.

I would give my right - whatever - if either one was a Jet!

Josi had a historic year offensively, and yes, is more valuable to his team. But that isn't what the award is for. It is the best all around defenseman. While I don't value secondary assists as less, it is worth noting he had a lot more of those than Makar. Makar was leaps and bounds ahead of him defensively, and I think that makes the difference. Makar is not just an OFD, and while I wouldn't say Josi is either, points aren't everything

No, can't go wrong either way.

Actually if it comes down to it, it would be hard to pass on Hedman when the chips are on the line. Terrific!!!

For me it’s MacDavid then Makar for best in league and Makar is gaining ground.

Watching him absolutely controlling the game, physical when he needs to be and always in the right place.

The results are in!

The Winnipeg Jets will select 14th in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

Over the next week or two, I will have an in-depth look at who may be available for the Jets at 14. It will be a mock draft style on an article, with an in-depth look at each player, and then a follow-up article on the players within reason to look at for Winnipeg. Look out for the potential of a collab on this one, though nothing has been set in stone for that yet.
