The trade is complete! For Cole Sillinger, Adam Boqvist, Jake Bean, and the 6th overall pick in the 2022 draft; the Blackhawks got back Seth Jones, Nolan Allan, and the 172nd overall pick in the 2022 draft.

More of this trade will be discussed on nights one and two of the draft as from now until then it’s all hypothetical as to who will Columbus take with pick 6.

I would like to see the Hogs play the right way. A solid 200’ game. Good team defense. Good goaltending.
If they do (or don’t) does it make any kind of a statement about Sorensen?

Definitely not great. But at some point we need to move on. Of course we have not really moved on from the Phil Esposito trade yet. So there is that.

I know this has been done before. But could someone post/compile how to use “red font”, post images, include links, URL’s etc.
Theo could you recommend to Ek that he have a “how to post” topic on the home page that posters could click on to find this type of information.

It is easier to do all that if you have talent.

So for those wanting to trade Kane, does anyone remember the Chris Chelios trade? Hawks got back a #1 draft choice on the current Detroit Roster (Anders Erickson) and 2 #1 draft choices (Steve McCarthy and Adam Munro). The only thing this trade did was make the Hawks even worse that they eventually were able to draft Kane and Toews about 7 years after.

I know we would all love to take back the Jones trade, but my guess is he is the least likely person to be traded on the hawks at this point. outside of maybe reichel. I do not see Davidson retaining for 8 years on any deal. considering even if we did 25 % the return would be modest. He would not even retain on calvin dehaan and his deal was expiring because we would be at the limit. (I would have) but I do agree trading 1 of CAT, Kane or teows before the draft with retention could really return you something. after UFA hits things get a bit harder to move guys with salary. Davidson says all the right things but I do think he would like to trade Kane and Toews because that would really help speed the rebuild up. the reason you consider trading cat is if kane is leaves either this coming year or after he becomes a UFA or you resign and do not put him with CAT and you pay Cat $9mil and he becomes a 30 goal heavy PP scorer you cannot trade him. you are already stuck with one big 8 year contract, on a rebuild do you want 2? guys with 8 years deals almost never get traded until year 6ish, nobody can fit them in under the cap.

The rub to all of that is hitting on your picks....If the Hawks would have selected Martin Havlat instead of McCarthy makes it a little more acceptable.

Also, wasn't this around the same time the Sedin twins were drafted and they wanted to go to the same team so the Hawks had to trade their 3rd overall to appease those idiots?

According to this writer's opinion, the Chelios trade to Detroit was only the 4th worst in Hawk history.

Some great questions, to me there's no point in trading Seth Jones and eating salary or giving a quality prospect to move him. That would just compound the problem. Kind of like trading Saad for Anisimov then trading Panarin for Saad later, lose- lose situation.

We have no salary cap issues, and Seth Jones is the kind of player KD likes. He's strong on the puck, can skate pretty good, tough as nails. Murphy would be the one to go kind of slow and not a very bright defenseman without the puck.

I saw a glimpse of what our top pairing could be, Seth Jones and Vlasic looked really good together.

Just don't think KD thinks he owes Seth Jones having his brother on the team.

Just want to add this, i know many may not think this is valuable but Seth Jones is also durable. I think one season he had an injury he missed some significant time

I continue to believe that the Seth Jones contract won't be an issue for 5+ years, when hopefully the Hawks have a bunch of really good players coming off their ELC's.

Wow!

"...assuming Seth Jones is here next season..."

I once almost placed a bet while in a Nevada casino. I have never placed a bet. But this time I figured I had the upper hand in knowledge over their odds.

It was the summer in 1995 when Quebec Nordiques were going to Colorado and the bet was a 30 - 1 that they would win Lord Stanley's Cup.

I tell my wife, before we leave, I really want to bet on them to win.
She agreed, and I forgot my passionate opinion and drove on.

I would bet Seth Jones is going nowhere this summer over my stab at Cup winner.

I remember that trade...and the Roenick trade...and the Hasek trade...and the Belfour trade.

Most of those trades were about the Old Man shedding money and I don't think Davidson would trade Kane just to trade Kane. If no one is giving up anything of real value, my guess is that Kane would remain a Hawk.

If you look at other first round picks from the Pully era, no matter if he was actually GM or not, his grubby mitts were on just about everything...didnt they pretty much hit on exactly one first round pick through the late 80's, 90's and early oughts?

Roenick was pretty much it unless we're counting Jimmy Waite's value as a goalie coach and Dan Cleary's Red Wing years.

I think the next first round pick that panned out to be more than JAG was Seabs when Smith was GM; and even though he hit on some late rounders, most of his 1st round picks were bad too.

Nice find! The writer mentions a couple of other trades I just did (Roenick and Hasek), though my guess is placing the Hasek trade over the Phil Esposito trade has to be somewhat due to recency bias.

They should have traded Belfour before Hasek but the Espo trade has to be not only the Hawks worst but possibly one of the worst in all sports...and I liked Pit Martin.

If the Hawks had Espo, Hodge and Stanfield, they likely win at least one of those SCF's with the Habs and possibly one or two more.

Also, thanks Theo for another great write up and taking the time to answer mailbag questions!

There are pros and cons in trading Kane or dcat. In the end Kane controls his fate and dcat Davidson has to decide if he receives an offer is it worth pulling the trigger like Hagel. Hawks have limited assets to bring back significant picks and top blue-chip prospects back. It will be a very interesting summer for the Blackhawks and Davidson and company.

Let's look at the situation defense next season.

Who even though not your ideal choice can play first pair

You don't like anyone or feel anyone deserves.such platitude, but grumble and go with Jones. Both McCabe and Murphy -
veterans with a system that works and a coach that enforces accountability- are next in line until the kids perform well enough to move into more prominent roles and obviously more TOI

So this is not a time to trade Jones.

And on a rebuild minus our #1 2022, yet we need to avoid sweeteners like a draft choice or descent prospect leaving. No way Jones is traded so soon

There could be more money available in next two years if 4-8 kids come aboard. Seems like a few dmen and bottom line players allows us to introduce that 4-8 newbies

Once some kids establish themselves as bona-fide NHL dmen, re- visit the Jones trade. After two years only Kane and DeBrincat (if here) make big coin. We could fit Jones under the salary cap.

Davidson's way of thinking might be eventually exchange Jones for some oher player whom is overpaid. No need to include valuable draft choices or top prospects. Maybe a third round or a player whom a kid will take their job. Something could be ironed out.

Why not be competitive and build at same time? It would mean kids develop nicely and bottom lines play hard, effectively. Loosing while outclassed badly is what happens if you trade Kane and or DeBrincat. Let us not be putrid; just draft well and get a proper coach. The '23 draft choice has to be a can't miss....very likely happens. Both Reichel, Teply and even Slavin surely would become a new line, or help form a new line

With Jones still here.

Maybe a hockey fan with poor typing skills figures it out.

The Wolves, who open their playoffs vs Rockford tonight,, bolstered by Stefan Noessen.
Noessen' s first big scoring season. He has a contract with Carolina. He had 48 goals and 85 pts this season. Formerly #21 overall 2011 by Ottawa.
