“How many players can you name on the Edmonton Oilers that you would say are overpaid? How many would you say there are on the Colorado Avalanche? Looking at the Avalanche, the only name that maybe comes to mind is Erik Johnson with one more year at 6 million but that is it.”

That a problem for every Canadian team, unfortunately, due to economics.

Colorado is the first SC winner since the 2008 Red Wings that had below average goaltending. The similarities are both those teams had such superior skaters they compensated for weak goalies. I wouldn't expect most to replicate that formula. It does reinforce tanking and collecting a lot of top 5 picks though.

Holland signing Nurse for 1/4 mil more AAV than Col signed Makar for is more than just regional economics. It's outright poopty cap management.

The other interesting thing to note is players having career years going into UFAs. Similar to the flames, Kadri and Nichushkin both well exceeding anything they have done prior. Not sure you can bet on that going forward, and you maybe best to avoid paying the going rate as it can sting if they come back down to earth. Its the Fernando Pisani and Shawn Horcoff effect. 1 streak of greatness that leads to multi year contracts of disappointment.

Johnson is a UGA. Signing players long term just because they are fan faves is something that can set you back for years. Nuge and Nurse 8 years. And pro scouting seems like they have no clue. Wasting time on projects like Turris, trading (and signing) Foegele with less than great numbers, re-signing Barrie to 3 years....It all adds up.

Good write up Sean. Avs are sitting pretty still and if they want can come back next year with similar team.
Edmonton is in tough due to bad management. They got lucky with Kane but that won’t happen again next season. They can’t keep thinking they can outscore their giant flaws.

You can't compare Nurse's situation to Makar and Fox signing their 1st contracts thats like comparing Kadri's next contract to Kaprizov and Hughes'. Nurse signed for 3.2 when he was Makar's age. Nurse's situation is closer to Jones, Werenski and McAvoy signing for 9.5 mil.

Any way you slice it, Nurses contract stinks. 9.25 for 9 goals, playing with the 2 most offensive players in the league.
Makar and Fox both have Norris trophies.

Why not? Which player is actually worth chewing up over 11% of your total salary cap on? You spend that kind of kwon on the Nurse's of the world, and you will get stuck with an incomplete roster while being up against the cap.

They're somewhat comparable, it's just that Makar has just been so good that he had the leverage to basically negotiate for a long term deal like a UFA would, bypassing the whole bridge deal stage. In terms of market value, they are both negotiating long term deals so AAVs would be comparable seeing themselves as #1 dmen. I think Nurse's is higher due to the fact that he signed 8 years and not 6 so he can get that security. If Makar demanded 8 years I'm sure he would have got 10-11 to compensate for the cap going up in 6-8 years.

Yup. One of the stinkiest contracts in the league. He’s a 6 mill dman.

I was thinking 6.5, he’s not a bad D to have but not worth his new $. Holland buckled and blew his load way too early.

Nurse's leverage is that he knows Edmonton can't draft/trade/sign a legitimate contender's D corp, so as the best D they'll probably have this decade by far, they're screwed. And even if Edmonton could draft/acquire legit D(or fill other holes), they probably wouldn't anyway, cause excuses are easier and the team is a licence to print money anyway. Go look at how many RHD moved in the decade + where Edmonton kept saying there's just no way to acquire one. Look at the castaway scraps 97 & 29 have had to play with, as if wingers are so hard to acquire. Look at signing Smith last summer when half the league's goalies moved.

Why do you think Holland would rush and sell low on Puljujarvi when he was so patient on trading him when he went to play overseas and said he wouldn't play for the Oil again?

I don’t think he will. He’ll find a way to extend him. It’s probably gonna be a shorter deal around 2.5.

I doubt it. I think they don’t qualify him or try to trade him or let him walk.

Some leaf fan proposed Pulj for Sandin. Then they sign Pulj for 2x3 mill.

I said oilers would jump at that in a second.

Given the fact that it is well known many players in the NHL don't want to play in Edmonton and quite frequently ends up on the list of cities for players no trade clauses, do you think it is fair to compare what Edmonton pays for players vs. Colorodo? Not sure if you deliberately ignored this fact in your comparison or was just an oversight but surely it has to be considered when comparing what Edmonton pays for its players compared to other teams.

Multiple reports over the last few days say that Pul and the oilers are mutually going their own ways. So whether that means a trade or just letting him walk who knows.
