I like the Mangiapane for #2 OA trade.
Juraj Slafkovský might go 1st, according to Bob McKenzie, but being stuck with Cooley or Wright would be OK too! |

If you can get #2 for Mang you probably should start the car and make that deal and hope Dube and Pelletier elevate. |

I agree trading Mangiapane is the right move, but there's zero chance they're getting the second overall pick. Havlat's a pretty good comparison and he was traded in a similar situation with Smolinski, who was decent at the time, for a 2nd and some mediocre prospects that never amounted to anything.
The best they can hope for Mangiapane is a late first or a Pelletier tier prospect and maybe a little something else.
If they're going after the second overall, it's going to have to be something more like Mangiapane and Coronato, or maybe Mackey, Valimaki, or Kylington. There'd also have to be a deal worked out for Mangiapane.
I can't think of too many times when the second overall pick was traded, but it took a fortune when Burke did it to grab Sedin and took Yashin when the Senators took Spezza. |

Fitz has said the 2nd is available, not that he wants to sell it. Meaning if a good proposal comes his way it is available. Also meaning the best offer to the table MAY be able to acquire it. Mangi alone isn't going to do it.
Fitz also knows the flames are in a tough spot if Johnny wants to head back east and can offer the 2nd in a sign and trade for JH if that's what Johnny actually wants and is willing to extend in NJ. But that would take some more pieces. Think 2nd O/A, Sharagonavich (sp?), and a future 2nd for Johnny and a 3rd or something of the sort. Tre isn't in much of a bargaining position. if a good deal comes he has to act fast. |

35 goals with grit is worth WAY more than a late 1st but likely not #2 overall!

This was a great read Trevor! Mang for 2nd OA - I would do it, might even do Mang and Valimaki for 2nd OA. I love Mang - even wear his jersey but the cap space that would become available and the possibility of adding a top end elite prospect is too tempting - and we really could use more picks this year. |

Even with Gaudreau and Tkachuk signed up, and the cap situation worked out through trades and promotions given from Stockton's old team, how in the hell are The Flames going to take a step up and be able to compete against Edmonton-- assuming they find a goalie-- (but clearly lodged in Markstrom's brain as kryptonite) and Colorado who can skate, score, and grind it out with any team?
I don't think we have enough to offer to NJ for pick #2, even including Mangipane in there, but it would be a nice consolation prize while the rest of the team hovers around respectability and a good chance at making the playoffs, but needing another team to knock out Colorado for us. The Avalanche look like a dynasty in the making. The Flames look like they are treading water and they won't have so many players matching career highs in points next year, I don't think. |

Colorado have 1 more year at best that they can try & keep this lineup together. Mackinnon is going to get a mcDavid type contract next summer & the cap is going to change their team big time. |

Thanks Trevor!
Good read. I am starting to prepare myself for a Flames team without JG.
What is happening with Monahan? I thought I remember reading that he was ahead of schedule. Seems like he would be the candidate to be bought out.
UFA's after the 2023-24 Season: Lindholm, Tanev, Backlund, Hanafin, Toffoli
RFA's - Dube
Looking at this, and the uncertainty of JG resigning you can see why they traded so much draft capital this year.
If JG does not resign, now would be the proper time to do a rebuild. Almost all of those 2024 UFA's will be worth a boatload now compared to a year from now. Especially with next year being a strong draft.
I fear we could be returning to the Iginla years.

Monahan can't be bought out while he is on LTIR, by the time he is likely to be off LTIR - the buyout window will have closed.

Going back to Havlat. He was arguably more valuable at the time, especially factoring in playoff success, and they couldn't even get a late first.
I did say a late first plus something else.

Some like to undervalue our players, Ming’s not chopped liver. He’s the reigning MVP from the world championship, 35 goals, hard nosed player. If we have to add a Kylington or Hanifin to make the deal work, I’m all for it. |

It appears Fiala just set the floor for Chuck and Johny's upcoming contracts. Given what they got in return its tempting.

NJ may be discouraged from trading us their 2nd if it
a) makes the money work for Johnny's team
b) makes Calgary a more attractive hockey team in terms of talent to Johnny
You're getting my hopes up for that second though.
I say we circle back to Sillinger, he's got the physical traits we want, had a strong rookie season, 2 years left on his entry contract. He won't be a fresh rookie, which Sutter isn't fond of. It would be very interesting if we had Pelletier-Sillinger-Coronato as our 2nd line to Tkachuk-Lindholm-Gaudreau
I'm also having 2nd thoughts about Treliving wanting to clean out Lucic and Monny's contracts, we'll see, it'll be cool to see how it unfolds here pretty soon |

What possible reason would Columbus have to trade Sillinger? He's got the physical traits they want, had a strong rookie season, 2 years left on his entry contract, and it's his hometown.
The Flames also have nothing to trade that would make sense in a trade like that. |

The 19th pick is technically a mid first not a late first and Brock Faber is a high end prospect but I agree this is likely a reasonable expectation should Tre want to trade Mange. Also Fiala signing for 7.875 likely means Mange will come in at 6.5-7 pricing him out of Calgary unless JG signs elsewhere.

He's a prospect but calling him a high-end prospect is pretty generous. He probably maxes out as bottom pair defender/PK guy.
