Well, no it didn’t end well for the Romanov’s - but what dynasty ends without some struggles.

I've watched Romanov since he came into the league. Hard nosed young man who can hit. The only reason he was traded was cap management. Habs are up against it and Romanov is due a nice raise. Montreal turns the pick into 21 year old Kirby Dach. Hopefully a win-win

I assume Romanov is expected to slot into the second pair. That leaves Mayfield and presumably Salo for the bottom pair. I like Salo. I think the kid has potential but why are the people on here that weren’t ok with him playing a prominent role this coming season suddenly ok with it now? Interesting.

There’s a rumor circulating that we had an offer on the table for JT Miller that involved the 13th pick but Vancouver bailed at the last second and Lameriello pivoted to the Romanov deal. Like all things related to the islanders these days who knows if it’s true but I’m real curious to see how Lou is going to address our needs in the top 6?

https://twitter.com/Missi...&t=b3dtavBcCc5A6tvSvKqgMw This kid was talked about as the number 1 pick in this draft for the last 3 years. Somehow he drops to 4th in the last couple of months with no hockey being played... I love the stare at the Habs table. If he stays in Seattle he will be wearing the "C" in a few years. Truly amazing how these GM's talk themselves out of the obvious pick.

“We had an opportunity to get a 22 year old, top-4 defenseman. Tremendous character, tremendous competitiveness. We felt it was the right thing. We were looking for a defenseman & felt that the ones we were looking at would be gone.” - Lou Lamoriello after #NHLDraft Day 1.

I don't dislike the trade... it's a little bit frustrating when you think the same pick could have gotten them Kirby Dach but if nothing else having Romanov in the mix means Chara is probably not coming back.

Romanov was taken in 2018 with 38th pick. Next D taken was Bode Wilde at 41. Isles probably have had him on their radar for a while. 13th pick for him is not steep if he is same 2018 class as Dobson and fits the roster nicely.
For any 1st rd pick a top 4 d or top 6 forward is a hoped return, especially a player that already is one.

From what I saw of Salo, I liked him as well. Romanov gets this team younger and solidifies the top 4 for years to come. I agree that (outside of a miracle in free agency) im interested to see how Lou brings in a top line scoring winger to play with Barzal. The ones complaining about this deal are the perpetually disappointed in the Isles for not bringing in the big scorer. I had said to my Isles friends that ill wait until he fails to bring in the scorer this offseason before calling for his head like most already are.

If you go on youtube and watch some of Romanov's highlights I think the Isles fans will absolutely love this kid. Always takes the Body.. ALWAYS!

IF Romanov plays to his potential then the trade is a win obviously. To me it’s a trade that involves some risk, which I’m fine with, but I don’t think it’s as clear cut as a home run as some on here seem too. With that said it’s nice to have a player that’ll force opposing players to skate with their collective heads up. I just hope he does pan out as a long term top 4. I also wonder if Lameriello will look for a cheap bottom pairing option rather then force Salo into a full time role? As far as improving the top 6 I have no idea how Lou is going to address it?

Like the move. The KID hits like a bulldozer and is only 22, plenty of time to improve. Now Lou get a scorer!

And bring back Leddy.

I won't say much about whether the trade is good or bad since I honestly know next to nothing about Romanov. There's really no margin for error since that pick was probably the Isles' best asset in an important offseason...so it better be the right call!

I understand cap realities are the reason for Lou's moves on the left side of the D, but, even in that context, those moves have probably been his worst since he's been here (Toews and Leddy traded for very little and replaced with inadequate stopgaps). Left D was the team's greatest strength, and for it to turn into a hole with nothing to show for it stings a bit. This is a steep price to pay to correct all that, so hopefully it's the fix they need and we can finally move on to the hole this team's had since, like, Palffy was traded...finding a scorer!

I think the trade can work out well and I'm glad Romanov is only 22 and he moves the puck well and can hit. I see no issue giving Salo 3rd pair minutes with Mayfield. Improving the top 6 forwards will be tough but needs to be the focus now.

Lou just doesn’t understand the value of player vs draft picks. Look what he gave up to get Romanov and what he took back for a far better player in Toews

Having to move Toews was tough UIF. Hopefully Romanov works out well. The top 4 should be really good.

The Islanders need a real top line forward group. It's been a issue for far too long. Isles need a top 6 they can count on.

Pretty much agree with everything in this post. I’ll also add that I was hoping for a bit more certainty for the 13th pick. More of a sure thing. I’m not sure if Romanov checks that box but like you, I don’t know a heck of a lot about the player other then he’s 22 and hits a lot .

I don’t necessarily agree with the “having to move Toews” mantra. If you want to keep a player you find a way to do it. It’s not like the guy commanded an insurmountable salary. Toews made himself more expendable with the lackluster playoffs he had. Sure we had cap issues but I would bet just about anything if Toews had a strong playoffs that year Lou would’ve found a way to keep him. Especially with how much he values defenseman.
