Agree with you, the return seems not much.

Ben, will Sharks trade one goalie or roster 3?

I imagine one gets dealt, with Reimer being the most likely option. Kahkonen isn't going anywhere and I'd be pretty surprised if they move on from Hill given his age and the price they paid for him only a year ago.

cleared up cap space, which is important. SJ needs that to make moves going forward. its hard to assess trades in isolation anymore becuase with the $5 million or so available, that could be used for players that will be with the team over the next few years.

The return was very underwhelming, considering that the Sharks retained a 1/3 of the salary and will have Dead Cap Space of about $6mm for 3 years. That makes it harder to re-sign Meier next year as well.
The move to sign Benning for 4 years makes no sense either. He's a 7/8 journeyman D Man that can be had anywhere and the 4 years sends a bad message ot Kniazev and Hatakka and the other propsects that the organization doesn't have faith in you and your ability to develop over the next 4 years. In addition, buying out Balcers made no sense and he will probably outscore his replacement this year and have better analytics to boot...
If it were me, I'd trade Hill and not Reimer. Hill looked nervous in net last year and swam out of position often enough that you were reminded of Jones in his last season and he didn't inspire confidence in the team or fans either, Reimers performance last year earned him the 1A role to start the season.
