The only one of those proposals that I find ridiculous is the one for St. Louis. I doubt the Blues would offer either Kyrou or Buchnevich, but you throw BOTH of them into the deal? Along with Bolduc, who might be our best prospect? If that’s what it will take to get him, I hope the Blues pass.

I think St. Louis will discover soon enough that they just don't want to give up what Calgary wants. Calgary wants young players they can build on. Makes no sense that Calgary takes back over agers on retirement contracts. Sooner Calgary and St. Louis tell each other that there is no workable deal between them the sooner everyone can move on to do something that can actually work. New Jersey is far and away the team that has put itself in the best position to be able to get something done.

Plus Fitzgerald is family.

I feel like Calgary fans need to look at what DeBrincat, a similar age player with a similar career point per game, got back in a trade. And that was when the team trading him didn't have the clock ticking on losing him for nothing.

Doubtful Blues manage to make a Tkachuk trade work. They are in a good position without him, and if he really wants to come play in St. Louis, he can just take his arbitration award and do so next year.

Not sure Sutter will be coaching next year. He came back to coach a team with potential to win and not be involved in a rebuild

I wouldn't put too much stock in what Sutter wants since this trade has to lay some kind of foundation for the future and I can't see Sutter sticking around, or the team wanting him around, for more than 2 years unless they're still competing for a division title every year.

DeBrincat isn't the best player in the league at pissing off the other team while being an elite defensive winger. The clock ticking aspect is also overblown. All they need is multiple teams bidding and they'll get what they want.

Interesting to see what the return will be. To see Montreal involved in any blockbuster deal would be astonishing. They are not done throwing guys overboard, never mind acquiring a 10M winger. Next years draft is very strong. Status quo

Look, we've got Pelletier & Coronado on deck, try to get a top 5 pick or prospect that's leading his league in scoring - now you're talking about rewinding the rebuild, except this time the young guys have veteran d-men, 1st class goalie, leadership and experience up front, plus a real coach. I'd rather get young guys with greater potential in a cushy environment vs. 0.5 point per game players. Makes our salary cap way easier too.

And don't forget about Matthew Dumba - he's a UFA next year, and if we manage this right, he might want to be the hometown UFA signing.
That would make Hanifin expendable, Lindholm needs to be given a deadline for his intentions and if need be trade them for a top 3 pick to get a high end center.

If Murray Edwards stays true to his ways (of not rebuilding), I think this scenario fits best with all factors.

That said, the absolute best case scenario this year, is for us to tank, get our own top 5 pick, the following year we ice a line up including Pelletier, Coronado, 2023 top 5 pick, + high end prospect/pick from tkachuk, plus Dumba. From that alone we'd be in great shape, but Sutter won't let us tank.

Why did the Devils not step up with a big offer for Gaudreau? Apparently the Gaudreau camp was surprised that the Devils only had mild interest, at best.

Perhaps they knew Tkachuk was coming to market before the Flames were told of his decision.

To those who have already read the piece.

Update: Steve Macfarland of Calgary Hockey Now is saying he has tracked down a confirmed rumour via an NHL executive that Treliving shot down an offer of the second overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, a prospect and a roster player for Matthew Tkachuk. Treliving never lives that one down.

Hey Trevor! One point you are wrong on evidently is if an arbitrator awatds a 1 year term the Flames are allowed to trade Tkachuk, they just cant renegotiate an extension until January. The only way we are stuck with not being able to trade him would be if we had to match an offer sheet, which is why Flames went to Arbitration to avoid that scenario. Theoretically, we could hang on to Tkachuk until the trade deadline but I dont think that would be too healthy for the dressing room. Let him get his 1 year deal but then we are stuck with a rental type of return. Leafs would be a real strong candidate because their window is quickly closing with Matthews having just 2 years left & Marner 3 years. Then I would think Nylander, Sandin, Kerfoot 2023 1st & 2023 2nd would be a reasonable package I could see both teams agreeing too. Who knows the lure of playing with his old linemate Marner & Matthews, Tkachuk may extend on a 2 or 3 year deal & still be 27 & able to cash in on a long term deal when the cap is crazy & he has guys like Marner & Matthews to play with.

If we suck this year we could always flip Nylander out for another 1st +

Turning that trade down is crazy. The Flames could’ve even flipped that 2nd OA into more …

Agreed, which is why I dont know what has changed from then to now & why Jersey hasnt stepped up. Maybe they have, maybe Uncle or cousin Fitz is trying to talk Chucky into a 3-4 year deal like Lianne took & sign a long term deal then. I would think they know their 2023 1st probably wont be 2nd overall if they have Tkachuk, throw in Bratt & take your pick of one of their young guys like Mercer, Shara or Holtz & they would have just met Trelivings reported requirements. I would take that deal all day long.

NJ/DET would be the best partners from a building for the future standpoint.
STL ,the hometown fave and they do have a prospect like Neighbors (if they offered). Also Kyrou as highlighted.

Interesting to see where he goes and what for with all the speculation.

Saw one deal on Twitter with St Louis where it was something like Tarasenko & Kyllington to the NYI, then Kyrou, Scandella, NYI 2023 1st & Stl 2023 2nd to Calgary & MT to St Louis.

I wouldnt mind a deal with Detroit, but if Detroit is unwilling to give up their 2023 1st, which I understand, maybe Vrana, 2024 1st, 2023 2nd & Zadina would get me thinking seriously about that one.

If we got those two, still would like to get a pick maybe a 2023 2nd.

I also think Kyrou would fit nicely with Lindholm & Mangi as well.

That deal doesn't make a lick of sense for St. Louis. The most I see St. Louis giving up for Tkachuk is Kyrou and a pick, hopefully a first. Taresenko is coming off a 34 goal, 82 point season and they're just going to throw him in to make the cap work? They can get a decent haul back in a separate trade if they need to clear space.

I think there's room to debate whether Kyrou or Tkachuk will have a better next 8 years.
