Didn't Weegar mostly played as a LD for Florida last couple of years, alongside Ekblad? If so, Kylington will be traded for sure, and Weegar will likely man the 2nd PP with Hanifin, and skate alongside Tanev on the 2nd pairing at evens.

Hanifin-Ras
Weegar-Tanev
Zadorov-Meloche/Stone

Edit : last year he played close to 3 minutes per game on the PK and less than 1 on the PP, so while his points total are strong, he's likely not looking at increased PP time, but will be used as a shutdown with Tanev at evens and 1rst PK unit.

Flames big winners. MT will never come close to 100 pts again in his career.

I always thought that Gaudreau was going to go back to the United States eventually and that Tkachuk was toxic in the locker room. The biggest surprise to me so far is that Huberdeau waived his NTC.

From July 13th he only had a modified 8 team no-trade clause. If Calgary wasn't on it, Zito didn't have to ask, and Hubs didn't have to waive. So until he signs an extension, we won't know if he's actually happy to be here.

Maybe he would've put CGY on it but didn't because he never imagined we could trade for him. Players often do that kind of "strategy" with no-trade clauses. If they don't wanna move, they write down the teams most likely to be interested in a trade or able to do one to de facto change their limited NTC into a full one.

A player did that a couple years ago, ended up traded to an unexpected team and was super mad because of it. I can't remember which one exactly though, it just rang a bell

Bottom line is : we'll see. Until an extension is signed, i'll remain skeptical.

I think both teams might end up benefitting from the deal, but I am skeptical Tkachuk is such an elite offensive producer ever again. Excellent all around player, but I wouldn't expect PPG+ in the future.

Offensive numbers were inflated league wide last year. Tkachuk is likely a 25-30 goals 80 points player for the future.

Orrr the league is just trending towards a more offence oriented style, which has been the case for a couple seasons now.

No reason to think that’s gonna change anytime soon.

League has been wanting more offence and have been phasing in rules to get it. Goaltender equipment etc has lead to more goals. I don’t see it going away. Also there seems to be less and less capable defensemen these days.

Word is that some other teams are already calling the Flames about Huberdeau. Maybe they’ll flip him for even more.

Might as well since he’s a UFA next year and likely to (frank) off outta Calgary.

That makes a lot sense.
Huber has talked about Montreal in the past but what kind offer offer would that be?

This trade definitely bought Treliving some time. I believe his contract is up at the end of this season and unless the Flames do some damage In the playoffs, I don’t see him back.

I think Toffoli could be a huge winner as well if he gets a chance to play with Huberdeau.

On another note, lots of players from that world junior team coming out a saying they weren’t involved. Some have also come out out and said “no comment”. Little concerning that Dube has said “ I did nothing wrong”. My take on that is, I was there but didn’t participate. Am I thinking too hard about this? Is the stress of the situation why we saw an ineffective player for the playoffs?

Will be interesting to see if Tkachuk can maintain the point totals that earned him this deal. He was deployed on a loaded up top line that clicked wonderfully, but that might not be the case with the Panthers. At 9.5/yr he'll be expected to carry the weight a bit more, especially if he plays with Barkov. Those two @20 million probably won't have another elite winger to play with on a line. He's also going from a fairly weak pacific division last year to a pretty competitive Atlantic division that only seems to be getting better this year. Will be interesting to watch next year.

Weeger might not be happy going from 2nd most ice time to probably 4th or 5th, but he’s not going to be missing PP time. Florida used a 4 forward group on both units so Weegar wasn’t a regular. He only had 3 PP points, which makes his 44 points pretty impressive.

Calgary is a winner here. They can re-sign these guys, flip them if need be, flexibility is key in the cap world. I like the trade a lot. Especially for Tkachuk limiting the teams.

I disagree on Huberdeau being a "winner" out of this. I love Alberta, but I doubt he will be happy about leaving tax free FL and that stacked Panthers team for Calgary this year. He is actually the big loser in this deal. No one expected a 100+ pt guy like him to be dealt, and now we know his NMC just expired a couple weeks ago. It was a perfect storm that led him to be moved in this small window! I hope for Flames fans sake they have a shot at resigning him, but if him and Weegar both leave (granted can be flipped if Treliving actually has the balls to flip them off a good playoff team) it will be insult to injury next year all over again.

The tax thing is wildly overstated. First off, Florida isn't tax-free. It's state tax free, but the American government still gets its giant cut. Second, if you hire a tax lawyer, they can mitigate a lot of the differences. Some of the basic ones are getting into RCA can save you 50 percent or more on the tax you pay. If you have an all bonus contract like Tkachuk just signed and maintain a residence in Florida, you pay the tax in Florida. That also gets around all the pesky tax bills from road games. In Canada, bonuses are also only taxed at 15%. So you can bet if Huberdeau is staying, he'll be getting an all bonus contract.

The no state tax thing is definitely a thing, but it's not the massive thing people make it out to be. It's more of a tiebreaker.

, some teams have already inquired about Huberdeau, wondering if Flames will consider flipping him.

Do you ever get tired of getting put in your place??
