How much would he have gotten through arbitration?
3mill seems high doesn't it?

Not while GM's continue to be stupid and sign guys like Kapanen for 3.2 mil per. Is it high....probably. Would have have got more in arbitration.....probably.

People will likely the crap on the $ of this, but when you compare the foegele and Hopkins contracts its fair value. Most would argue Foegele makes too much, but you could say similar things about Nuge for the points he gets when he often gets first pp time. At times he is getting paid 5.1 to be a 3rd line center. Dont get me wrong, hes likely our best 2 way forward so there is more to why we pay him what we do.

I would think majority of the league would take Jesses contract as fair market value.

Past two seasons JP has produced at above a .5ppg pace. General rule of them for arbitration is roughly 100,000 for every point. I think there was a real concern JP could have gotten 3.6 or more from arbitration

Like him but that’s too much. Then again I only saw a few playoff games this year.

I dunno. I kinda think $3m isn’t bad for a roll of the bones. It’s only 1 year. You can handle it for that. Especially considering what guys are getting now.

You might get lucky, and if not, you walk away at the end or try to get a little compensation during the season.

Maybe, but you should be able to get the same level of production out of a guy like Heinen or ERod at half the cost, or better production out of a guy like Stastny or even Kessel at the same or better cost. Heck, FA's like Gagner, Ennis, Donato, and Brassard produced at .4 PPG clips for near league minimum (not that I am campaigning for any of these last few).

Well Capfriendly has them at -2.9 mill. But assuming Klef and Smith go to LTIR that would open 6.3 mill. So they’d have roughly 3.3 mill in space but need to sign more than just Yamo. They only have 19 on the roster right now including Broberg and Koekkoek.

Last thing the Oilers need is another 30 point left wing. If Erod agreed to 2 mil then JP would've already been traded. We tried Gagner, Ennis and Brassard they only qualify as top 9 forwards on bottom 5 teams.

Treliving tried to overpay two players, even that wasn’t enough to keep them around.

Contrary to your framing, every NHL team benefits from adding depth that's capable of scoring 30 points. As Oilers fans, we ought to know what it's like having too few players capable of scoring even just 30 points.

We had 4 wingers who put up 30+ points last year. That includes Poolparty, who only put up 36 while getting good minutes with top players (even some pp time), and we are now paying 3 mil. What we need is bottom 6 wingers who can put up 30 point in a season. And, IMO, if ERod had been offered 2 mil by any team, he would likely already be signed.

I also noted that I wasn't saying I wanted Gagner, Ennis, or Brassard, I was just saying that they can put up similar points to JP for much much less than what we just gave him.

Tanev>Nurse @ 1/2 the price.
You continue to slam the former Canucks even though the Canucks have been brutal without them.
Latest rankings of D has Weegar @20, Andersson @38, Hanifin @39, Tanev @42, Nurse @58.
