Good morning! Thanks Theo for all your Blackhawks news during these dog days of summer. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Blackhawks powerplay will have some challenges this year. Let’s hope that their PK is top ten, so they can minimize the amount of games that they get blown out. Now for some glimmer of hope. Hope that a couple of young defensemen step up this year, maybe two of Mitchell, Regula, or Vlasic.

Obviously, comparing the offense of Lafferty and Katchouk is like picking pepper our of fly poop, but I was a little surprised that you gave Katchouk the edge. I thought Lafferty showed a little better hands and scoring prowess (at least after he was getting more playing time).

Darth mentioned that Huberdeau’s contract would look ugly in a few year’s, I think it looks ugly now.

Overall it's ugly, maybe even moreso in comparison to Jones' contract. However, the Flames will get 2-3 years of decent value, after that Huberdeau will likely be on a significant decline.

I understand why the Flames signed Huberdeau, although I don't agree with the deal. They needed to show something of substance for the Tkachuk deal. They couldn't afford to let the players they got walk in 2023 and risk the draft pick turning into nothing. Plus, the Flames likely had to pay a premium to keep Huberdeau long-term. Calgary is an amazing city, but I don't believe its one of the more desirable NHL destinations for players.

GOOD WRITE UP THEO ! Makes sense the PP options ... not too many options but hopefully they can get pucks to the net and be desent. With Domi coming out, saying that Richardson is the reason he signed with the Hawks, I wonder who might be potential breakout candidates this year under the new coach. My guess Raddysh would be one. What do you think ? Maybe topic for future blogs ?????

No you misunderstood, or maybe I didn't write it clearly. Seeing the high praise that Luke Richardson has gotten from Max Domi, WHO DO SEE AS POTENTIAL BREAKOUT CANDIDATES UNDER LUKE RICHARDSON ????? We probably need to wait and see how Richardson runs the show, but my guess might be Taylor Raddysh

This was a stupid deal by Calgary. The dude will be 30 when his deal kicks in, and 38 when the deal comes to a close. This is why I think the new philosophy with the hawks is to avoid this type of thing moving forward and building continuously within, so we don't have to sign our guys long term at 30 for 8 year asinine deals like this. When guys get too expensive, you purge them, kind of like the Oakland Athletics, but you build a little bit and compete to win a Stanley Cup on a every few years or so basis. Then we don't have to go out and sign or trade for these types of players and sign them at ludicrous cap numbers to strap the team for the future. When they become too much you purge them and bring up the next future or they may already be in house on the team and you keep the purge going year over year to keep the team competitive to win and get to the playoffs and win stanley cups on a consistent or semi consistent basis. Then we can weaponize our extra cap space and continue to build prospects on the farm and build super teams. I imagine this is what KD has in mind, but I am not a fly on the wall, but I HOPE WE NEVER RUN INTO CAP HELL AGAIN.

Been looking around PuckPedia. The only team I see being able to make a run at Kane at the TDL (provided there is no big LTIR's) is the Islanders. If Kane wants to sign an extension before being traded, the Islanders would also be the only one unless the other teams gut their roster to make room. Probably means the return for Kane would be what the Flyers got for Giroux, a first in the 20's or 30's and a prospect.

That's as of now. Who knows what future if any LTIR cap space impacts there will be with any contenders at the TDL. Also there's the 3 way trade option which will reduce Kane's cap hit. That will add to the list of trade candidates.

But yes agree with the Giroux like return. Maybe more if Kane/Brisson work out an extension with the acquiring team before a trade.

Wonder if KD doesn't get the return he wants, he does like Hoyer did with Contreras, doesn't trade him and lets him go FA (I know a little different with Contreras qualifying offer that would result in a draft pick if Contreras declined). In FA, does Kane try to win a cup, or get the most money (which KD will be well positioned to offer Kane)

I know this is kind of out there but might it be possible that Kane will wait until after next years draft to see if the Hawks will be able to get Bedard?

Does something like this work for Kane at TDL?

To Philadelphia:
Kane (half salary retained)

To Chicago:
JVR
2024 1st
2023 2nd (changes to first if Kane signs in Philly)

Do you consider the Flyers a Stanley cup contender? They will most likely miss the playoffs again.

They had 7 less points than the Hawks last year. Think Torts is the difference in 30 points?
