Kevin Allen: Oilers got it right, Red Wings are improved, and Vegas is an unknown Does anyone have a feel for whether Vegas is a playoff team?

Philly has a reputation for pushing the envelope when it comes to hard-nosed play. When 25 years ago? This team is soft as butter.

This team has sucked for a decade plus Kevin. Stop living in the past when it comes to the Flyers.

Why not write a refreshing new take on how a once great franchise is now one of the worst run in all of sorts. Why talk about their out of date archaic approach?

I met you back in 1994 Kevin when I was writing as a high school junior for Michigan Hockey Magazine. God that was a long time ago. Can we get a new Red Wings blogger please???

Another writer that hates the Flyers cause he thinks it's still 1975. The Flyers have been one of the softest teams in the entire league for the last decade, but you can't get the 1970's out of your head for some reason? I'll agree that it will be interesting to see how Torts interacts with this soft as Charmain toilet paper team, but please stop with the old tired rhetoric about them pushing the obnoxious element into their game. That has long since past. Thanks!

When was the last time the Flyers "pushed the envelope when it comes to hard-nosed play"? 40 years ago?

Yes... would definitely be nice to get another Red Wings blogger. Just seems nuts an original six team does not have a blogger. Wings still have a huge fan base and are a team on the rise. Wings for certain have a shot at making the playoffs.. even though Atlantic division is the toughest division in the NHL.

Yeah, Matthews may score 65 goals this season, but can he hit the 65 total playoff goals mark over the course of his career?

In order of appearance...

-Flyers aren't a tough team, as others have already mentioned

-are the Red Wings really one of the top 6 intriguing storylines? Meh. If you are looking for a turnaround story, Ottawa is far more interesting than Detroit.

-Matthews is a gifted goal scorer. But does he "have it all"? Last time I looked he has never won a single playoff series. 0 for 6. His career playoff production is also noticeably worse than his regular season stats.

How did the oilers get it right? They signed a 30 year old goalie with a total of 120 career starts to a 5x5 contract. And he had worse stats than Smith on a better defensive team.

Lehner being out is a massive plus for Vegas.

Philly fans should look forward to(the) John Tortorella Show. He is never dull.

But the Flyers are. They’ll struggle mightily to score goals. You know you’re in trouble when the focus is the coach not the team.

Why don't you just give Mathews 50 mill per year and pay the rest of the team peanuts Why is the discussion always about money and greed. Sports as a whole stinks. Getting tired of hearing the same old crap day after day.

"If he stays healthy, Matthews can score 65-plus this season. He's 24 years old and boasts 259 NHL goals. Shot. Release. Accuracy. Matthews has it all. What's his average salary going to be on his next contract? Thirteen million? Fourteen million? Fifteen million?"

I was referencing the blog's statement about the next big contract the Leafs would possibly throw at him that would continue to cause them to be unable to afford the depth needed to win the Cup. So, who cares about next year's 65 goal number? Both Matthews and the Leafs should be focusing on the 65 playoff goal number, and how to make it happen.

I think Detroit is more interesting. Both have made a change in net and both have added top 6 forwards. The difference is the Wings have made some changes on defense and so far Ottawa has not. The biggest difference imo is the Wings have changed their coaching while the Sens have the same coach that has repeatedly sunk his team early in seasons by playing big useless defensemen that are horrible in all aspects of the game. I expect more of the same from him unless the GM can get rid of all of them before the start of the season and if a GM has to get rid of players for a coach not to play them or overplay them, he shouldn't be the coach to begin with.

I am assuming Matthews contract with the Coyotes will be in the $13M dollar range. A slight hometown discount to help bring the cup to his hometown.

I can’t wait for a top six of Keller - Matthews - Cooley, Schmaltz - Bedard - Guenther. It’s gonna be electric!
