Wendel, Auston, Mats, Lindros, Thornton, Tavares, Berard . . . and then I cheated to get the other two because I actually didn't remember that 1 was and didn't know that the other was.

He's the one that people have trouble remembering.

Another good way to make people remember (or demonstrate they have forgotten) Ramage is to ask them to name the last 10 Leafs captains in order.

The captains question may even be harder.

That was the first NHL Entry draft - prior to that it was the NHL Amateur Draft - but in that draft the Bruins selected Bourque at #8. Something I didn't know before today - LA traded that pick to Boston for a guy named Ron Grahame who was a pretty terrible goalie. He played a couple of seasons for LA before departing the NHL after 6 terrible games with the Nordiques. In his first season with LA he had a -20.3 GSAA which was the 3rd worst in the league among 38 ranked goalies. In the next season he was 36th out of 50 - but that was only because he'd lost his starting job and played in half the number of games!

One other interesting thing from this draft: Wayne Gretzky was supposed to be the consensus #1 pick, but he had a personal services contract with Peter Pocklington and Edmonton and he refused to waive it - as all WHA players were expected to do. He didn't want to go play for the Rockies, so instead the NHL made a deal and moved Edmonton to the last draft spot but let them keep Gretzky; they picked Kevin Lowe in that spot. In the same draft the Oilers traded their 2nd & 3rd round picks to Minnesota for Dave Semenko and Minny's 3rd, with whom Edmonton selected Mark Messier. The Stars did get Neal Broten out of it with the 2nd, but that draft gave birth to a dynasty.

I remember my dad calling me and my brothers down into the basement (we had one TV - in the basement) to watch Gretzky sign that contract at centre ice.

My dad told us the kid was the next Bobby Orr.

It was for 21 years - to end in '99. Apparently that was Gretzky's idea.

I didn't know about that at all. That's bananas. And it makes the trade even more crazy.

But only because Jim Rice just signed a $5.4-million dollar deal with Boston Red Sox.

I remember when the Jays signed Bill Caudill to a contract in 1985 - it was for over $1M a year.

Toronto the Good was outraged. No, seriously - there were people who were absolutely losing their poop, furious that someone playing professional sports for a Toronto team could be making such an obscene amount of money.

He actually got death threats.

Turns out those people were right - he should have been killed for getting so much money, because he absolutely sucked.

The Jays were so much fun in the 1980s. I love them so much more than the World Series teams.
