I'm curious as to why announcing a Matthews extension would have to wait until Nylander is traded.

Future cap space could be limited after adding Pageau and Wahlstrom. So Leafs have to see what's left and potentially adjust the Matthews contract accordingly. As per sources...

Matthews' new deal doesn't kick in until season after next. Why would signing it hinge on a trade being made?

How will Auston sign for the Sabres next year if he signs with Toronto now?

I have prophesized his coming and not as an old man.

This rumor is therefore officially debunked.

The Matthews deal would kick in next season and have 0 impact on their current cap situation for the upcoming season.

But if Nylander is traded for Pageau, then that eats up $5M of cap space over the next 2 years. Actually would be closer to $6-7M depending on what Wahlstrom signs for. So first trade Nylander, then sign Wahlstrom, then see what's left for Matthews. Sometimes things don't seem logical, but this is what sources are saying.

not sure if you are being sarcastic or not...

Matthews cap hit for 2023-24 is $11,640,250 regardless of when/if Nylander is traded..
any extension Matthews signs will not start until the 2024-25 season.

knowing how screwed TO is against next cap gets Nylander acquiring team additional leverage

Logic states: Nylander is not being traded to the Islanders for any deal containing Pageau

Probably because it will be obvious that Willie Ny can’t be afforded. They don’t want people blaming 34……he wants too much money and we had to trade Willie to afford him……..also if it become obvious that we can’t afford Willie Ny after this season perhaps teams try and use that as an advantage in trade negotiations!? Best guess.

Maybe that true but the acquiring team also has to consider that TO could just choose to deal Nylander rights at the draft or let him walk away and gain $7M is cap space. Next years UFA crop is expected to be very good. In a time where the cap has been flat for 4 years and now increasing by as much as $5M, to have an additional $7M on top of that to go hunting with us like like finding adamantium

Seravalli was just on the TSN radio in Toronto and said he doesn’t believe that a contract for AM is done/ready. However he did said what many other insiders have said …all sides an understanding of what the contract will be and are good with it so there is no rush or urgency. AM wants to wait and see what the team will look like (with or without Nylander) Before he puts pen to paper.

Then it's not "set" is it...

Matthews won't be signing a sliding scale contract based how how much money the Leafs have.
