Yeah, but when a team is in a groove, the last thing they want is a three week break.

There were only three teams with more points, in the Eastern Conference, at the Shutdown to accommodate the Olympics, Pittsburgh, Boston and Tampa.

At the end of the season there were 11 teams with more points than the leafs, and the three teams I mentioned earlier, Boston, Pittsburgh and Tampa, finished 1,2,3 in points in the Conference.

Clearly the Shutdown to accommodate the Olympics did not affect them as it did the leafs. I will give you the loss of Bernier as a big reason for the collapse, but the compressed schedule before and after the shutdown was not good for the NHL in my opinion.

With 3 wins in 4 games, the Toronto Maple Leafs wiped the floor with the Ottawa Senators in the 2013/14 NHL season. With a .750 win% against them, a few more games against the Ottawa Senators likely would have put the Leafs in the playoffs.
