unfortunately, i think he's too stupid to realize what's happening.

Well, I wouldn't say that he's definitely too stupid, just that we should all consider the possibility that he is.

I love how he now conveniently omits his yapping about Laine being better, winning the Calder, etc.

Auston Matthews is already among the best forwards in the division, as a rookie. Top 20 in scoring, good two way player. Quite possible he's considered a top 5 NHL forward next year. If he plays the full season with Nylander, 85-90 points is not out of the question.

- prock

Agreed, but I think that whoever is on the other wing is going to be more of a determining factor here - Hyman does the retrieving just fine, but Matthews would have about a dozen more assists if Hyman could finish better.

but spatso always said matthews was better.

with matthews' drive to improve, i'd be surprised if he's not a top 5 player next year. he'll be haunting the sens for the next +10 years.

Funny how so many reports start with the assumption that Laine is the likely winner of the Calder this season. Yet, it does not appear to impact on the Leafs choosing to take someone else with their first round pick. Do you think if it was any team other than the Leafs making this pick, the selection would be different? Everyone seems certain that Laine is the overwhelming favourite of Jets management and fans.

Is it possible that this draft turns out to be a huge blunder by Leaf management? They are in a very difficult position. I think Matthews is the right pick. But, if Laine is the goal scorer everyone expects, if he wins the Calder and if he becomes an on ice leader and MVP for the Jets there may be some unhappy blue and white supporters.

Loser points in the Atlantic

leafs 15
Sabres 12
Wings 12
Panthers 11
Tampa 10
Ottawa 10
Montreal 9
Boston 6

- D0PPELGANGER

Don't trash the loser point... without the loser points they got down the stretch here, Ottawa's record would(amazingly) look even worse.

what's it at now, 3 wins in their last 12 games?

Interesting, last time Ottawa partook in a home-at-home series, they came away with only 1/4 points, with a loser point in the shootout in their first game.

Will history repeat itself?

I'd be fine with just going back to ties, after three periods, in the regular season.

The NHL moved away from ties, because they felt fans, mainly in the US, didn't like games ending in ties ...... and now after 5 mins of 3 on 3, and the stupid shootout, it feels like a waste of time and energy, and it probably wouldn't change much at the end of the season if they just stuck with ties ........... and we'd all get home a half and hour earlier.

- D0PPELGANGER

Didn't it used to be a 20 minute OT period with a tie at the end?

Seems to me this gets fans home faster, and more importantly, as far as the networks are concerned, frees up airtime faster.

I don't mind it much for entertainment value. I actually find it kind of fun to watch. But I do feel like they are chincy points, that they're not really earning for playing hockey.

With a tie game, it's obviously a close game, most people are happy to stay an extra half hour.

Honestly, if you think the games take too long, you should advocate more for the rule that they've been using in international hockey for years. You have 10 seconds to get to the faceoff dot, or the ref drops the puck, whether you're there or not. That's partially why international games tend to be shorter.

I thought they were contemplating bringing that into the NHL a few years back.

- prock

Yeah, they did, and it was 20 seconds......... and it was enforced for about half a season.

karlsson with 30 minutes last night. sens wearing him out to end the year after a year of the coach having get blasted with pucks blocking shots night in and night out.

condon starting to look leaky again.

doesn't look good for the sens, even against the lowly red wings.

No, not during the regular season, ever to my knowledge. games ended after three period, win or tied.

OT during the regular season has only been around since the the 1983-84 season, with a five minute period, and I think it was 5 on 5 ........ and no loser points if a team scored.

Which I guess is important when your poophole of an arena is practically in a different time-zone...
- lumlums

The location of the Arena was integral for the return of the Senators to the NHL. Under the terms of expansion, the winning bids needed a "NHL" arena, or plans to build one within a determined time frame ............. the current location is the land that was owned by Terrace Investments at the time, and without it, the Senators would not have been re-admitted to the NHL.

But the Current Cheap Owner ( COO) is going to cough up the money to build a new Arena in the downtown core, sometime in the next 5 to 8 years........... depending on the "red tape" involved with four difference Government agencies involved.

Well, I'd rather they keep rolling a few lines. Winnipeg has ONE strong line, where has it gotten them.

He's gonna hit 70 as a rookie. I'm saying, Matthews, Nylander, Hyman, and Matthews could hit 85 to 90 next year. Guaranteed? No, but it's not out of the question.

Also, next year, the top 3 point producing NHL players on an Ontario team, will all play for the Leafs.
