The location of the Arena was integral for the return of the Senators to the NHL. Under the terms of expansion, the winning bids needed a "NHL" arena, or plans to build one within a determined time frame ............. the current location is the land that was owned by Terrace Investments at the time, and without it, the Senators would not have been re-admitted to the NHL.

But the Current Cheap Owner ( COO) is going to cough up the money to build a new Arena in the downtown core, sometime in the next 5 to 8 years........... depending on the "red tape" involved with four difference Government agencies involved.

The rightfully labelled cheap owner doesn't want to move the team there out of any altruistic purposes, but only because he thinks he can make more money off the suckers who support his Sens.

The article you posted illustrates this pretty clearly - if the proposal his group backs doesn't get chosen, he won't let the Sens play there.

Yeah, they did, and it was 20 seconds......... and it was enforced for about half a season.

That's a shame. Makes the game move quicker. The huge delays between whistles can really sap the energy from a crowd.

Lets wait and see.
Every other owner has done the threat of leaving if they dont get the public money.. I cant see EM not taking his opportunity to do the same

He's not threatening to leave, he's threatening not to move his team unless his company gets the construction bid.
Therefore there would be no need for the new arena.

Well, I'd rather they keep rolling a few lines. Winnipeg has ONE strong line, where has it gotten them.

He's gonna hit 70 as a rookie. I'm saying, Matthews, Nylander, Hyman, and Matthews could hit 85 to 90 next year. Guaranteed? No, but it's not out of the question.

Also, next year, the top 3 point producing NHL players on an Ontario team, will all play for the Leafs.

I just hope that they show up tonight and win

Way too rich, the irony only gets better after some reflection.

The Leafs were a last place team. The Leafs are a last place team.

Matthews is not McDavid or Eichal or perhaps, even Laine or Puljujarvi. Yet Leaf fans have created this huge expectation around a kid that was not nearly the force of the Finns on the big stages of international hockey last year.

Not sure why the Leafs have delayed in signing him to a contract. Perhaps they think he is going to need some AHL development time. Nobody is hoping against Matthews, he should be a good player. But, there is absolutely nothing in his track record that suggests he will be an impact player in the NHL next year. Perhaps, there is a fatal flaw in the Leaf charism. If Matthews is put out head to head against veteran NHL centres every night and fans expect him to outperform all comers it is going to be a very long and disappointing winter for the blue and white.

I understand the importance of the summer season for Leaf fans. It is an opportunity to renew hope and create a bond with the team in the belief that next year will see the Leafs finally triumph. It is the Oiler model of a few years ago that had Yakupov (like Matthews, an older profile draft pick) dominating scoring in future NHL seasons or RNH being the slickest centre to come along in years.

Always keep in mind the notion that "we are different," is something that is really well understood. We know Matthews is not McDavid, not even close. We want to believe that he is better than Yakupov. Likely he is in the same range as RNH, but he will likely struggle to produce numbers as good as RNH got in his rookie year (18 goals, 34 assists in 64 games).

Washington on the tail end of their second game in 2 nights, with Washington rested. The likelihood they win tonight is not good.

That said, I wouldn't write them off completely. Babcock gave Matthews, Marner, and Nylander lots of rest last night. He spread the ice out across all 4 lines. So they won't be as tired as you would normally expect in this situation.

Washington has also got a 5 point lead on the conference, with Pittsburgh injured, and playing Columbus, the third place team, tonight. After tonight, one of either Pittsburgh or Columbus is eliminated from catching Washington. This game doesn't hold a tonne of meaning to Washington. One win in their remaining 4 games, and they've realistically clinched (it would require winning out to catch, with just one win). They're pretty safe.

The Leafs are on fire though. When they're on their game, there isn't a team in the league they can't beat.

I love how he now conveniently omits his yapping about Laine being better, winning the Calder, etc.

Auston Matthews is already among the best forwards in the division, as a rookie. Top 20 in scoring, good two way player. Quite possible he's considered a top 5 NHL forward next year. If he plays the full season with Nylander, 85-90 points is not out of the question.

- prock

This is true, and you could also look bad by saying it if he has the sophomore slump. You know if that happens then Doppel and Spaz will be all over you.

It won't be as epic as the beatdown Systemtool put on the Ottawa fanbase the last couple days, but it will be irritating

Soon we will enter phase 1 of the senaturd’s offseason. Believe it or not, this occurs prior to the playoffs, whether they are going to make it or not. Their fans lament that they are having issues, and are not at their best. Deep down, this is them preparing for the inevitable disappointment that their team serves up to them, year after year. Their fans will pretend that they have a great team, and it is just injuries that hold them back. They will talk about how it wasn’t that they had lots of injuries, but who was injured. They will talk of the contributions that long gone players, who were never good to begin with, like Clarke Macarthur, could bring to a team. They will talk about how he pushes all the other second rate players down the lineup to a spot they are more suited for.

This leads us to phase 2. They will defend their substandard team. Often their captain. He may say things like “I doubt we can win this series”, or get visibly annoyed, but they will attribute that to being a player that must just “lead on ice in a quiet, non leader type way”, or “it’s just his divorce”.

But, eventually, phase 3 sets in. Their owner lowballs free agents, including, in many cases, their own players, even their captain. Their captain gets angry, maybe even complains, and puts demands on icing a competitive team. There is disarray. Fans justify the lowballing, with claims of being better off without adding new players, and more talent. In the end, the senaturds will end up going into the next season with the same team. Fans will claim that it must be the coaching.

Phase 4. Time for the coach to go on the hot seat. Surely a new coach will douse the flames of this tire fire right? The old one just “lost the room”. Next, the coach that was just seen as saviour, maybe because they splurged on an experienced coach, or he won a jack adams, or something, gets fired. WHO MIGHT THEY HIRE?!?!?!!?!?!? While we all know that whoever they hire, won’t matter, Sens fans talk of a new system, that will solve all the woes of the team. Surely putting more of an emphasis on one struggling area will solve that problem, with no ill effects on the other areas of their game, right? It’s August, and a new promising season is fast approaching.

Phase 5 – Rookie Camp. Whoa!!! Look at these young whippersnappers go, they look amazing playing against other non-NHL talent. No doubt, these are impact players, and the likes of Colin White and Thomas Chabot will perform like players taken in the top 5 of the draft. Colin White is probably good for 60 points, and Chabot is the broom to sweep up the defensive mess Erik Karlsson leaves right? Things are looking up!!!!

Phase 6 – the Thomas Chabot or Colin White type mentioned in phase 5, of years past, is deemed a failure, and “just wasn’t developed properly”. It is clear that somehow, something went wrong, and this player is traded for an overpriced veteran castoff from somewhere else. “He was never going to do anything here” they say. “At 22, he was done developing”.

And now, the puck drops. Exciting!!!! Despite being outplayed consistently, they snag a few points, maybe their goalie plays above his head for a while. Maybe even go on a streak! It doesn’t matter that they’re getting outplayed, it’s a good thing, because that’s clearly their plan, it’s the way they do things. They’re the PESKY SENS!!!!

Phase 7 – the season progresses, the young player in phase 6 has stepped up to a new level. Wow is he good. Better than the player he was traded for. “Doesn’t matter, he never was going to work out here”.

And there we go. The senaturds offseason!

it's never stopped. It's full of gems. Probably about 6 or 7 years old now. I think if you look, guys like Robbie Earl are mentioned in the first few pages.

Don't let some people's complaints fool you, this is arguably the most entertaining thread on the site. The epic posts thread is up there too, but that's actually not a discussion, just a place to put the best posts.
