Maybe going with the patient approach in terms of a goalie would have been wise, but drafting and developing doesn't work overnight, they gambled on best UFA available for short term (and long term given the contract) and so far no good.

If you guys had Carey Price you'd be bloody well invincible.

quick, lundqvist, rinne, price, tim (frank)ing thomas. yeah, they'd be invincible with any of those guys. although they still would have to play the right way. give them any goalie and if they play like they did this series they will lose against anyone.

and i've actually found that drafting and development doesn't even work over 20 years. lol. it was a gamble, sure. but it seemed like a relatively good bet at the time and i admired the aggression they had in trying to fix the problem after all that time.

i feel almost the same way.

hopefully last thing i'm going to say about all of this is that i like the team and i would do all of the deals again. but having said that, i wish bryzgalov wasn't the goalie on my favorite hockey team. i'd still do that deal at that time because he was the best goalie on the market and they were aggressively trying to fix a gaping 20 year hole (and who knew he was going to play like this?). i just have trouble watching him. i'm repeating myself like jsaq, but i promise i'll try to make this the last time i say it. i like him as a guy. he's fun and all. but he isn't playing like what they paid him. if it was a 3 mill cap hit for 3 or 4 years i'd feel okay. maybe something drastically changes and i love him next year, but that's a daunting wait-and-see. that is a long ass contract.

and i still love the coach. people will say he didn't adjust, but there's no way to know what he was telling the team. maybe they didn't adjust? if it becomes a pattern, okay. but for now i love the coach. love the coach, the GM, and 95% of the players.

Well it's easy for me to criticize with the benefit of hindsight, I liked the move at the time, and I still think he can be a good keeper for you guys.

I said Price because I'm a Habs fan and Price's mental toughness is off the charts, his calm demeanour would work wonders on your current group.

truth is the skaters still need to play like they have a weakness at goaltender. like they did with bouch and leighton. if they got to the finals with those two, they can do it with this guy.

unfortunately i only saw them play one game like that and it was game 6 against the pens.

also, they are short one chris pronger and one ian laperriere (who will block shots with his face if he knows he has to) to play that way.

quick - third round
lundqvist - seventh
rinne - eighth
thomas - ninth and didn't become starter in nhl until 12 years later (always was a racist, though)

it is hard to believe that they never hit on one in all those years. they really didn't draft their goalies any different than other teams do it. it's just that none of them panned out.

even maxime ouellet and jean marc pelletier, who they took early for goalies. just bad luck.

Roy and Brodeur weren't big time prospects either. I think the fact that every goalie is taught to play just about the same style has something to do with it, teams will draft the guys that are bigger and seem quicker.

but i also think that goaltenders' performances are hugely related to team play. look at quick, rinne, smith, thomas, etc. the kings and b's majorly dictated pace throughout the season and routinely outchanced their opponents each night. preds and yotes play that uber-fagety sag game in their d-zone and just don't allow many good chances. upon review, the yotes actually gave up third most shots/game in league so i don't know wtf is going on there.

anywho the shot stat is very superficial and there is a lot more to the game than just looking at shot totals--but, look at the teams that gave up the most shots against/game and the fewest. pretty striking resemblance to the standings aside from a couple anomalies.

if lexinton flyer isn't on my shortlist, he's definitely in my top-10

This reminds me of when the Habs beat the Caps a couple years ago, everyone talked about Halak, who undeniably did make some great saves, but I'd be stinking rich if I had a dime for every shot the Caps took immediately upon crossing the blue line.

As far as Thomas, I think that the fact that players aren't used to facing someone like him and the fact the he has one of the best defences in the league to clear his sloppy ass rebounds helps quite a bit.
