I really wonder what the GM is thinking when they sign someone for 6 years and the player is immediately bad. Like not even a build up or a deterioration. Just bad right away.

If you had this roster 3-5 years ago, you'd be so set. Players have wised up now. They don't sign those low AAV contracts for security anymore. They're all more willing to holdout or roll the dice on shorter term deals.

Gillis offer sheeted Backes like 10 years ago and the Blues matched and signed Steve Bernier(lol) to an offer sheet.

That'd be fine too. NBA has something similar. Rookie deals are 4 years then the player becomes a rfa. There is no compensation for rfas though. You can match the offer, but get nothing in return if you don't. Players can also sign the qualifying offer and go to ufa the next season.

The NHL is also the only league where teams get mad at each other for signing rfas.
