also i was just playing ball hockey because my parents didn't think of getting their son on skates when they saw that he liked hockey.

my mother called it "soccer" a lot and i had to correct her.

i was lucky enough to have parents who knew someone who had a long career as a goalie equipment rep, and got decent rebates on gear. i think that went a long way in me being able to play goalie.

when i played in the states and i could finally get rid of my plastic neck dangler guard thing, i was so happy because it felt like i could see my chest for the first time.

kick i just did some quick math and that mask probably saw around 300 hours of practice and game time in a single year. it is banged up.

God damn. I'm trying to think about how much time I spent in my skates one year. Top of the line bauers and I trashed them over one season.

However much hours about September-March would have been at 9 ice sessions a week. I had them in August too for about maybe a total of 20 skates...

God damn. I totally never thought of this before but holy poop.

i bought all my stuff used at "play it again sports"

but it was nice for the time. i had a vaughn glove. can't remember who made the chest protector but it was way too monstrous for ball hockey. way overboard on the chest protector.

my blocker was a vaughn but it was that old tan one with the blue patch. not sure what i was thinking there.

my pants were the only part of my stuff that i could afford to buy off the "new" rack. oh, and my sticks, but they were only like 30 bucks back then.

oh, i would never get rid of that. the only place i was ever afraid of getting hit with a shot was my throat.

mine was blue cause my helmet was blue.

oh wait, my helmet wasn't used. forgot that. and i had it fitted with a cage with the elastic straps so i could just pull it off after a loss or when i needed to be berated face to face by my teammates at the bench.

One of the best things my dad ever did was let me start buying sticks off the expensive rack, after I researched them.

Instead of busting a bunch of $170 sticks a season, I got to only go through 2-3 tops good ones.

I had a Bauer Vapor XXXX grip that I bought in like... 2007 and used until 2010. Best stick I ever had. Just had to flick my wrists and the puck would fly off it. Never had a slapshot though because it was too whippy.

the only goalie sticks i actually remember were a blue louisville with red writing and a black northland "kryptolite"with green writing and no curve.

i don't remember any of my other sticks.

i remember the louisville because i really liked it and i remember the northland because i really hated it.

man, vaughn was the best. parents knew someone at vaughn from when i was 7-14 years old. then i had to go with itech because that's where the rep went to work. then i the rule changes took effect in my league for the new gear sizes and i had to go to the new sized pads so i went back to vaughn and they were amazing. now i have reeboks, don't like the glove as much. vaughn gloves are amazing.

See I only went big on skates and gloves. Would usually go just above middle of the road for everything else.

Except my pants. I had top of the line pants because I only bought the padding part since we'd get pant covers and I could basically save like 80 bucks.

I guess I went top on helmet too because brain.

I still have a lot of my shinpads and stuff. Only one I've replaced recently is shoulder pads because now I just wear the sherwood 5030's.

I can never get new elbow pads either. I have these old CCM Vector 6's that are perfect. I've tried like 100 times when I'm at the shop to see if there may be new ones I dig but they all crank my elbow to like 60 degrees. Can never straighten my arm in them comfortably.

my actual neckguard is from a company that only makes neck, ankle and knee guards. they use a bulletproof gel for the padding, it's unreal. it covers my whole neck and sternum.
edit: just googled sternum. it does not cover my sternum.

that makes sense. when i was 10 i didnt have a top of the line chest protector. then i got a slapshot to the ribs at goalie camp from some 15 year old junior wannabe and from then on i got the best one available. bruised ribs at 10 is no fun.

Right at the end of my days when i still thought I could go somewhere, my dad become squash buddies with the Bauer rep around here.

He hooked me up my last season with all the top stuff but I ended up going back to my old stuff. Too bulky and I couldn't stick handle. Ditched the shoulders, elbows and shins. Shoulders were like football sized. See above for elbow complaints. I hated the way the puck bounced off my shin pads. Couldn't get a reliable bounce.

Same reason I hate those plastic skate guards for blocking shots. I've thought about them a few times but the puck just flies off willy-nilly.

I was rummaging through the garage the other day. I have like 6 pairs of extra gloves I just don't use for various reasons.

That happened to me once with my bucket. Dad thought in PeeWee when hitting was a thing that "kids don't know how to hit so you don't need a good bucket yet" and then I got my bell absolutely rung. Was doing the Sami Kapanen after and we went and bought the best CCM one they had at the time.

i had a blue itech one that snapped into the bars of the cage. it didn't dangle. it just jutted out from the bottom of the cage.

pretty sure it was just plastic and i could have been killed the one time i did play ice with my high school team at a practice.
