TOP Source:”Marner is still not a happy camper and likely to move on.” |

Just a quick update here, but I got off the phone with a couple of soures today (and a few texts), and it’s very safe to say that Mitch Marner is not a happy camper. He’s not going to do say anything publicly here to make a scene going into the playoffs, but he is still very much stinging from being asked to waive his no-trade clause so the Leafs could get Rantanen…
Marner is, of course, going to be a free agent this summer, and publicly over the last few years has sounded very adamint about his desire to remain a Leaf.
Why Toronto even considered making this trade is still baffling. But by the time it gets to the point where you ask a player to waive his no-trade clause you are sending very definitive messages to the player.. Especially when that player is up for a new contract. In players’ minds, asking them to wave is essentially saying you’ve given up on the player. That is why sometimes players with no movement clauses will wave anyway because they really are pissed off at the team for asking and figure their future here is nothing.
I asked some people what the Leafs could do to repair this, and I really didn’t get any good answers. Tavares and Knies are also due contracts this summer…. So the plot thickens.
One source was pretty convinced this meant Toronto isn’t interested in keeping Marner and won’t expect him back. He said the only way you do this is if you are already resigned to losing a player.
This whole thing is insane, especially when you realize that Marner is better than Rantanen, and the contracts will be comparable… Toronto back themselves into a corner needlessly here.
What say you?
