The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they’ve re-signed forward Martin Necas to a two-year contract, carrying a $6.5 million cap hit.

Necas is coming off his fifth full season with the Hurricanes, in which he scored 24 goals and 53 points in 77 games.

Especially amidst the mass departures from the team’s roster, retaining Necas is a huge help to the top-six. The team was likely looking to move him this offseason, but he’ll fill a hole in the short-term, and the Hurricanes can still look to deal him at some point over the next two years, if they have an opportunity to get a big return.

His cap hit did come slightly higher than expected though – I had projected that a two-year deal for Necas was likely to carry a $5.5 million cap hit, in the article below at HockeyComparables.com:

The other downside is that the contract does walk Necas right to unrestricted free agency in 2026.

At just 25 years old though and with huge offensive upside, Necas may still have another level to his game. It remains to be seen as to whether plans could change for him to be a long-term fit with the team, but he’s likely set for a larger role this season, and makes the Hurricanes offense a lot more formidable.
