Yzerman’s presser - Ghost gone? Kane talks? Some good hits

It took the better part of 5 years to have a decent back and forth with a good press source. One of the more common “isms” on Yzerman is “close to the vest”. You’ll hear vets like St. James thank Yzerman for doing any pressers (no, that’s not who I touch base with). Steve just limits what comes out of the office.

Earlier, Mlive posted regarding a potential buyout on Holl. We had a good back and forth about buyouts here and Holl’s is probably the easiest hit to take. Essentially the same hit each year and freeing up about 2 million each season for the next 4. His limited deployment was described as a coaching decision in which the value of the left side players and relatively good health made a tough path for Holl to break in. This certainly isn’t the Commodore situation of years ago (for those who remember, we still didn’t get that 64 jersey). Holl could well be the discussed buyout.

Sticking with the blue line, Johansson’s extension and subjectivity to waivers is going to force Detroit’s hand a bit. Edvinsson (though not by the interview) feels like an inevitable to many on the outside. The spots for the current squad are being turned over to players coming through the system. Obviously a path fans are hoping for.

In terms of Ghost, Yzerman didn’t sound confident. However, there are talks with Kane’s camp. The Chicago announcement squashing a reunion may have altered direction for 88. Time will tell.

Larkin actually had a surgery for the injury that kept him off of team USA. Both he and Lyon are expected for camp. So is Husso but I remain skeptical. Glad to be wrong if he’s healthy and good to go.

Talk of moving up or down and how quickly those deals can happen will face challenges as the decentralized draft kicks in next season. Wings seem happy with the change, other teams (unnamed) not as much. The cap friendly buyout was brought up. Though it’s a nice easy tool, Wings less upset than a few other clubs. The journalist who brought it up seemed to lament the move.

It’s a decent watch. Russian scouting was brought up along with jr vs Euro. Nice piece while the finals wind down.
