Robo refs, yea or nay and in what capacity?

Baseball may be testing robot umpires next spring which could lead to implementation in 2026. At this point, it looks like they are only going to use as an assist in a challenge. IF this goes through and is successful, it could be a huge shift for the sport and be used more widely.

For the NHL, I don’t know how many penalties or challenges an AI driven robot can be used on. Offsides and pucks over glass? There are inconsistencies in NHL reffing but it may be more effective to have an outside voice. DPS has zero consistency, I have more faith in the refs on ice than in the league. Getting a 3rd party to weigh in on supplemental discipline who are outside of the league may be a stronger improvement for those. People who are trained to compare to precedent etc.

Robotics/AI is taking jobs already. Comic books, youtube channels, box scores to a level that I wasn’t aware of, movies etc. you can’t un ring that bell. I don’t want to see the NHL rush into implementation because we know where that goes. Every job that can be taken will be and usage will expand.

At any rate, chime in on your own feelings. How much needs to be preserved in the sports and entertainment environment? As always, it’s all of you that make this work and I’m incredibly grateful for that. In about 6- 7 weeks we should be starting to see player led practices around the league and the prospect tournament as well. There is a big decision being made about Bally in the next 9 days (before end of month). Hoping that an easily accessed solution is presented. Will talk more on that once the ruling comes down.
