In two games, after a 5-2 win vs. the Panthers, Detroit has given up 9 goals and scored 3. For the entirety of the road trip the team has seen a goal undone in a minute or so. Yes, Tampa scores the highest GPG in the league and Dallas was more than ready but some underlying issues are rearing their head.
For 2 straight games Chiarot on the PK has let a player stay uncontested in the paint behind him and two goals have resulted in missed coverage. Chiarot also led to a goal against after being tripped by a ref while trying to clear the puck and Seider tried to rim it around the opposite direction. It was intercepted and a goal against was the price.
Tampa and Dallas are legitimate skilled teams that are just a talent level above Detroit. These two blowouts may likely kill any serious talk of bringing in help at the TDL and cause Yzerman to see if he can redeem anything off the roster that isn’t part of a plan moving forward.
These games were painful. Not just losses, but stretches of goals against that saw Detroit just look lost. Lyon’s first game back after injury, ok. But the PK has been dreadful and the power play has (predictably) lost some efficacy. Winning 8 of the past 10 would normally be a fantastic run. However, a terrible stretch early on put the team in a bad place.
Unfortunately, all of Detroit sports had a bad weekend. For better or worse, the city lives for games. The Lion’s loss was painful as the city seemed to have been on a massive high. As for the Wings, these losses are a reminder of a lack of talent where you can outwork a team and be embarrassed. Kane dealing with some sort of injury isn’t great, but this was a tough 2 days.
Let me know your thoughts. If you missed it, I had a chance to talk to Alex Cotten over in Slovakia and the 2020 RD had some insight and was a fun break away from the grind. I’ll embed below, enjoy it if you can! We’ll see if Detroit can find a different outcome in Philly.
1st Period goals:
Not the start Detroit needed. At 5:26 the Stars score after in zone mismanagement of the puck by the D. 1-0 DAL
At 13:05 after a failed clearing attempt (Chiarot blew a tire with the help of a ref and Seider tried to reverse the puck on the boards) on the PK, Dallas strikes again. Another example of Chiarot letting someone behind him in the crease factor into the scoring. He cannot let guys into the paint like that. 2-0 DAL. Chiarot has had some awful moments in the past 2.
Then at 14:18 Dallas scores into a wide empty net as Lyon went for a poke check and Borque was wide open with Kane trailing. 3-0 DAL.
Shots: 10-8 DAL
Score: 3-0 DAL
2nd Period goals:
No goals scored
Shots: 22-17 DET
Score: 3-0 DAL
3rd Period goals:
at 12:01 Edvinsson finally got Detroit on the board (3-1 DAL):
Larkin carried the puck from the Dzone all the way down ice and wrapped behind the net. He found Edvinsson skating into the zone and the big Dman got his 5th of the year.
