When Marco Kasper intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, skated calmly into the zone and scored it felt like a different game. It’s difficult to put enough emphasis on the surprise season of the now 2nd line center who put up his 15th of the season to open the scoring. Raymond’s quick shot on the power play after plenty of quick touches by the team looked like a well drawn up play. Now at 26, he and Larkin both still have an opportunity to break 30 down the stretch.
So Detroit wins an important one, but a lot has to happen to get them over the team in front of them. A wise person told me, just take the win. This was a tight contest, Talbot came up huge in net with a .952 sv% and Detroit made 2 goals be enough for the win. Those are the kind of games they need to be in more and more to take this group to the post season.
Back to Kasper for just a moment. Quite frankly, a standout in the preseason but you’re never quite sure how that will convert to in season play. He picked off the pass without hesitation and instead of waiting for backup or a quick dump in just skated in on net and seemed to catch Swayman a bit off guard. The ESPN crew seemed fairly unhappy with the goal but it was a beauty.
Let me know your thoughts, and how you see Kasper progressing into the next few years. It’s always nice to grab a ‘W’, but solid efforts all around were a welcome sight to be sure.
1st Period goals:
Detroit got on the board first as Marco Kasper scored his 15th of the season on Detroit’s first shot of the game. Kasper intercepted a pass intended for Pastrnak in the neutral zone, skated in and snapped a shot from about the middle of the ice between the faceoff dots that hit the bottom of Swayman’s glove and deflected in. 1-0 DET
Detroit started the second period with a carry over power play. Lucas Raymond cashed in with his 26th of the season. There was some good puck movement with touches from everyone on the ice. The puck went to Kane who was to the left of the net. He found Seider at the blue line who passed to Raymond at the top of the faceoff circle. Slapshot and in. 2-0 DET
