The Anaheim Ducks were sellers once again at this year’s trade deadline, sending Brian Dumoulin to the New Jersey Devils yesterday, in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick and prospect Herman Traff.

Dumoulin was originally acquired in the offseason from the Seattle Kraken, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2026. He played 61 games with the Ducks this season, managing 16 points while averaging just under 20 minutes per game.

It’s an expected move for Anaheim – Dumoulin was a pending unrestricted free agent, and while the Ducks have made a bit of a push towards the playoff race over the last little while, a playoff appearance is still a fairly unlikely bet. Getting a second-round pick (and prospect) was likely on the upper-end of what we could've hoped for the return to be.

Traff was selected by the Devils in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft. The forward has spent the majority of the season in Sweden’s top professional league, scoring three goals and seven points in 25 SHL games. He may not be an elite-level prospect, but he’s another player to add to the Ducks’ deep prospect pool.

Considering the Ducks acquired Dumoulin for a fourth-round pick in the offseason, then got three-quarters of a season with Dumoulin, and flipped him for a second-round pick and a prospect, it’s a nice move from Pat Verbeek. The deal follows a similar process to what we saw with Ilya Lyubushkin last season.

In a smaller move, the Ducks also acquired defenseman Oliver Kylington from the New York Islanders, for future considerations.

Kylington was a big part of the Calgary Flames’ blue line a few years ago, but didn’t have a huge impact this season in his time with the Colorado Avalanche. He was sent to the Islanders in yesterday’s trade involving Brock Nelson, before being flipped to Anaheim. Kylington is a pending free agent, but could add some depth to the blue line for the remainder of the season.

Overall, it was a fairly quiet deadline for the Ducks, but the Dumoulin trade is a nice move to add future assets.
