Wright Skating In Top Nine Role

The goal for the Seattle Kraken is of course to make the playoffs but arguably just as important I believe this season is figuring out what the team has in Shane Wright. Luckily it appears like new head coach Dan Bylsma is prepared to do just that.

Over the past few days, Wright has been skating on a like with Bjorkstrand and Tolvanen. That is a potentially offensively potent trio that should help to compliment Wright's offensive instincts. My biggest concern was we were once again going to see Wright in a fourth line role, playing less than 10 minutes a game with the likes of Tanev. Tanev has a skillset that is useful for the Kraken but probably not the best linemate for a 4th overall selection.

This now leaves Yanni Gourde as the fourth line centre and arguably now the best 4th line centre in the NHL. Gourde is an excellent two way player still and can be counted on against other teams elite lines. My best guess is we see the Wright trio get a healthy dose of offensive end starts and in home games more time against their opponents third pairing D and bottom six, while the Gourde trio picks up the bulk of the tougher starts.

I still believe this group lacks true elite scoring talent and finishing ability but the group remains deep in terms of capable NHL players throughout the forward core. The Kraken need Wright to flourish and turn into a legitimate option for this team moving forward. Starting him in a third line role with some defensive responsibilities and capable linemates is an excellent start.

Thanks for reading.
