Quick Hits: July 27, 2024

1) Flyers winger Tyson Foerster finished seventh in the Calder Trophy balloting for NHL Rookie of the Year in 2023-24, including 10 third-place votes. He also received one fifth-place vote in the Selke Trophy race for the NHL's top defensive forward. Offensively, he posted 20 goals and 33 points.

Apart from the arrival of Matvei Michkov, Foerster's continued growth in his second full NHL season will be one of the keys to the Flyers scoring more goals in 2023-24. It would also be ideal if Owen Tippett can attain his first 30-goal season and if Morgan Frost can get 20 (he had 19 in 2022-23) with a healthy number of assists.

Coming up on the Flyers official website, I will take an in-depth look at Foerster's rookie season and his opportunities for growth in the ongoing "Offseason Spotlight" series.

2) Today in Flyers History: July 27

1973: Completing the trade to reacquire Bernie Parent, the Flyers send goaltender Doug Favell to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1994: The Flyers sign left winger Shjon Podein, formerly of the Edmonton Oilers, as an unrestricted free agent.

2005: The Flyers sign 2003 first-round picks Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, to respective entry-level contracts. Several months earlier, after their Junior hockey seasons were finished, Richards and Carter joined the Philadelphia Phantoms and helped the team win the Calder Cup. Philly also signs defense prospect Alexandre Picard, who was also part of the Calder Cup run.
